Amille knew full well what she would say next; what his shorty...well, not actually his shorty, though he still considered her that in his mind, during his innermost thoughts. But he knew what she would say. And she said it. She told him, as usual: "Stop staring at my fucking eyes, nigga!"
But how could he? They were absolutely the strangest eyes he'd ever seen. And it wasn't just because she was African American either. She wasn't the first one of them he'd met with exotic colored eyes. In fact, he could name at least ten of them without trying. But this was different.
When he first met her, he thought she was wearing contacts. Never doubted it for a moment. No real eyes could ever be that color. Olives, was his first thought as it pertained to their color, only his mental image hadn't conjured up the green outer skin of an olive. It was closer to the color of squash, and yet the yellow was literally mixed in with the green.
Her dusky complexion made it even crazier. She had that singer Lauren Hill's color. It was the strangest thing he'd ever seen, and longed to tell her so, but was terrified at the thought she might flip had he done so. He understood the amount of shit she must go through, and only God knew what growing up looking so different had done to her psyche.
So he didn't blame her for getting pissed off with him. See, it was true. He simply couldn't help gazing at her face. When he'd gently grabbed her chin with both hands and tilted her head first to the left, then to the right, his heart jumped at what he suddenly noticed about her eyes.
The strange color of them was literally swirling. If you've ever seen smoke in a bottle you'll understand what I mean by swirling. It was as if her irises were mini yellowish-green clouds floating amidst extremely long, thick lashes.
"What the hell?" he'd whispered in shock, releasing her face and stepping back from her.
"What the hell what?" she'd said. "What are you talking about?"
"Your eyes, Penny. Why are they moving like that? Their color... moving like...I don't know, like clouds or something."
Penny had only shrugged and exhaled air explosively. But the way she'd turned away from him, spoke volumes. Clearly, she'd heard that before, so he wasn't going crazy. He really was seeing what he thought he was seeing. Yet, that still didn't explain anything.
And there was something else; something he couldn't bring himself to vocalize to anyone...especially not to Penny. But he knew what he'd seen. After turning her face to the right, it seemed as if that strange color of her irises truly were clouds, and deep within the yellowish-green clouds he saw two tiny brightly glowing suns.
Now, he made himself avert his own eyes from her face, thinking: God she has such beautiful skin. And she did have beautiful skin. Perfectly even-toned, without the slightest mark or blemish. The kind of skin he may have spent his time gazing deep into had her unusual eyes not drawn his attention so powerfully. Her lips were big and shapely, her nose, small and straight. She even had dimples; one in her chin like Miss Mulatto, two in her face like Lauren London's.
Without the eyes she was a gorgeous female. With them, she was otherworldly.
