Story Begins
Cal had finally decided to take a day off his work and was walking through the park with his daughter Emily. They sat down on the edge of the fountain in the centre of the park. Cal stared off in the distance. Emily looked up to see what her dad's focus was on and saw Dr. Gillian Foster walk in. Emily looked up at her dad with a wide grin.
"What are you smiling about," Cal said noticing his daughter.
"When are you gonna ask her out dad?" She said playfully nudging him.
Cal, eyes still on Foster, explained, "It's not that simple Em. Foster and I are work partners an-"
"Shut up dad!" Emily said splashing her dad with water and laughing! "Don't give me that!"
Within seconds, a water fight between the two had broke out! Luckily, the park was empty apart from Gillian and a few other people pushing prams and some rushing to work.
"Okay, okay love, I'm done!" Cal said standing up, drenched.
His focus shifted yet again to Gillian who was sitting down, head in hands. As she lifted her head, her eyes caught those of her colleague at the opposite end of the park. Cal smiled a goofy smile and Gillian made her way over,
"Hello Emily, Cal," she said smiling at them both.
"Oi Gill, How are you?" Cal said, flicking the remaining water off of his hands towards Emily, his eyes fixated on Foster's.
"I'm Good Cal," she said staring into her partners eyes. Even she knew that was a lie.
Cal lifted a hand and placed it on Gillian's cheek.
"Em...Aren't you supposed to be staying over at a friends?" He asked staring back at Gillian who's eyes were welling up.
"Yeah dad...Of course I am!" Emily smiled, "Have fun!" As she walked away, she looked back at her dad. She saw the two adults in her life take comfort in each other. Not only that, but she saw her dad use the soft touches he only used on her, be used on Gillian, his Best Friend.
"What's wrong Darling?" Cal asked, hand still holding Gillian close, who's gaze had shifted to the floor.
"Oh Cal!" Gill lifted her hand to meet Cal's and held his hand tighty as tears escaped her eyes. "Today would of been my Sophie's birthday and- and seeing you and Emily just-"
She erupted into tears.
"Shhh Love, It's okay," Cal said, bringing his other hand to rub her shoulder. "Darling, I-I would hug you but...I'm Soaked though!" He wrapped his hands round hers and held them tightly.
Gillian looked up and met Cal's greeny eyes and crooked half smile she loved so much. He was standing so close, she could feel the heat rolling off his wet shirt. Seeing the space between them, Gillian dropped his hands and walked into the circle of his arms, pressing her head against his chest and beathing in the familliar smell. As she breathed deeply, she felt the tears well up again and a tear escaped her eye and she clung onto Cal tighter.
"It's okay Love," he said wrapping an arm around her and stroking her soft hair with the other, "I'm here."
After a few moments, Cal pushed his face close to hers so their eyes met again. He looked into her soft, blue eyes and held her gaze, slowly starting to smile.
"C'mon Darling...Let's get out of here, shall we?" Without waiting for a response, he intertwined his fingers with hers and walked out the park, still holding her close.
Time Lapse
They pulled up to Cal's house and walked to the front door. He unlocked it and they both went inside.
"You want anything?" Cal asked as he pulled off his top and replaced it with a new one. Gillian sat down on his sofa.
She shook her head and looked down at the floor silently. Cal walked over to her and crouched infront of her, just to see a tear fall and drop onto the floor. He walked round and sat next to her, gently pulling her into a hug. Silently, they sat there, enjoying each others company.
"Thanks Cal," Gill said regaining her voice. She started to get up and only just got to her feet, " But I have to go to-"
Cal pulled her back down,"Go where Love?" He looked at her with the same intensity as he did with his clients. It was a 'Heat of the Moment' look only Cal could pull off at a time like this.
"I-" she started but couldn't finish. Cal pinned her down on the couch and smiled a wild smile, coming only centimetres from her face.
"Nowhere...right Darling?" he said pulling a blanket over them both, pulling her closer to him and holding her as close as possible.
She saw the softness in his eyes and saw he was trying to cheer her up in the ways he knew best. She smiled a strained smile before the tears came flooding back and she buried her face in Cal's chest.
Time seemed to pause, and everything just grinded to a hault when they were together. It was like no one else existed. No one else mattered. It was just them.
When each had settled, Gill turned and met the waiting gaze of Cal. She smiled a tired smile, as if every ounce of strenght had been taken out of her.
"You'll be okay Love," he said. Not a question, but as a statement.
"Cal," Gillian said deflated," I- I'm faling apart!"
He pulled her close and rested his head on hers,"Shhh. No you're not Darling. I won't let that happen."
She looked up at him, eyes filled with confusion...and sadness, but mostly...Love.
"Get some sleep," he said softly kissing her on her head, and wrapping an arm around her waist so he could pull her close. Close enough to hear her every breath, every heart beat. Close enough so he'd never feel that he'd have to let her go.
