"I think... I'm done... for the day... Or the week," I say between gasps of air. I just won the community bike race, for the fourth year, and it was the longest yet. They are just trying to make me loose by making the race longer every year.
"Well," I think, "They can just eat my dust." I smirk at the thought.
"Great job, Meadow! That was the best year yet!" the mayor's daughter congratulates me. Her name is Johanna, I think. My mind is foggy.
Because across from me I can see a totally hot guy. I've never seen him before, he looks my age. He sees me looking at him and smiles. I get instant butterflies and feel my cheeks grow hot. What's happening. Guys have never been a topic I've been completely interested in. But the way his striking blue eyes stand out against his darker skin and long black hair make all the difference in the world.
I take gulps of water, still thinking about that boy.
He's important. He's my story.

"And now class, I would like you to welcome our new student, Blake Maximus," my eighth period teacher says, clearly glad for the day to be almost over, like the rest of us. It's that boy from the bike race back in summer. His name is Blake. Blake Maximus. He meets my eyes, and I look away, embarrassed. After class, he leans against the locker beside mine, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Hey," I say, not making eye contact. Sneaking past him and twisting my lock, I can feel him smiling. Then, he speaks.
"You're pretty shy for the most popular girl in school."
I blush but then come up with a comeback that makes me seem like I'm not.
"And you're pretty confident for someone who hardly knows me," I say.
"Woah, feisty!" he chuckles. "I just wanted to say congrats on the bike race." With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me alone in the halls.
