Édith struggled to open the door of the grand apartment as she always had. It was an old door and the hinges often got stuck. She turned the knob once again and threw the combined force of her hip and shoulder into the door. She tumbled through landing, thankfully, on both of her feet and laughed despite herself. She was so glad to be home.

She then stepped off to the right and heaved her tired, curvy body onto the rich rosewood bench of the entrance hall. Édith placed her bag on the seat next to her, then leaned forward to slip her red mules off her feet. As she reached down, a sparkle caught her eye.

Édith blushed profusely, indeed a slightly pink hue spread from her cheeks down her neck to kiss her chest. Set in a gold band encrusted with a spectacularly woven series of minuscule, rectangular diamonds, was a large emerald stone. Édith was usually bold and at times even experimental with her fashion choices; thus, where her clothing lacked in regal simplicity, her jewelry tended to be minimal. Except this engagement ring was anything but simple; it was sexy, seductive, and regal... just like her man. Édith smirked.

After removing her coat, the young woman padded down the hall past the formal sitting room, past the guest bedroom and veered sharply left into the living room making a beeline for the room's bar. Édith laughed surprised to find eggnog set out along with cinnamon and peppermint sticks, dark rum, and ice cubes, instead of her favorite Friday-night pink gin. She made herself a drink then wandered into the kitchen situated to her left.
