The drive to the kingdom was short but mother and father insisted I take a pack for overnight. This is the worst. How will I get another story from Grandpa? Our car was pulled around to the front where the guards stood guarding us.

"Madam Mabel, it's good to see you again." The kingdoms head guard said to me as my bags were carried inside.

"Nate!" I said wrapping my arms around my favorite knight in shining armor.

"Mabel. Where are your manners?" My mother scolded me.

"I'm sorry sir Nathanial." He bows to me and leads my parents inside. So much for playtime.

I am taken to my spare room in the palace to rest before mealtime. They leave me here, but I never stay. If I do then the other children will find me, and I am not ready for that. I find my feet leading me down my favorite hallway of the entire kingdom, to the library. The door is never guarded but I doubt that I would be stopped by any of my friends. "Hello madam. It is good to see you."

"You too Madam Sara. You look lovely as always." I smile sweetly up at the librarian.

"Oh, stop that. I know your only being nice to me because I let you in here without telling anyone. Not that they don't already know." I leave her and find my favorite section. History. That is a lie, it is not my favorite but after Grandfathers story last night I want to know more. I find a book that dated back to one of the major wars before the rein of King Dean and pull it off the shelf. 'Battle of the Knights.' Lame title but interesting content. I find a reading nook and begin my journey to another time.

Battle of the Knights

After the reign of King Mochef, the kingdom had fallen into war. Numbers of lords and rulers came to collect the land in which the descendants of the vile king refused to take the throne.

But I thought the kingdom loved the princess. Why did she turn her back on her people? I continue reading with my excitement to find out who takes the kingdom.

After many losses and small victories, the lord and lady Stewarts take the throne. Burning down the original kingdom and artifacts left from prior generations. To this day many still believe that the souls of the dead soldiers guard the remaining of the burned treasure. Lord and lady Stewarts rein lasted three years before they were killed by an unknown assassin. The land suffered from depression and famous until King Doberman took the throne almost six years after Lord Stewarts' death.

Doberman. That is the princess's family name. Princess Jade. Pretty name for her ugly personality. Though I have vowed to never say it to her face, but that girl makes more problems than she is worth. That is saying a lot because she is worth a fortune. Maybe her good looks will get her bye one day, just not today.

I continue to read on about the war and Jades family. Nothing exciting other than the names of all the brave men who have fallen and lost their lives to make our kingdom what it is today.

I place a bookmark in my place and put the book back where I found it. I want to read the rest but like my grandfather says, 'If Mr. Moons asleep then so should I.' I make my way to the doors and realize I have spent longer in there than I thought. It was already past dark, and mother and father were probably worried. I race off to my room passing the meeting hall and other bedrooms in record time. I open my door to see everything how I left it. So, no one came to check on me again? I put my pajamas on and curl up in bed. My tummy roars at me but I am too tired to get up. I could call on a maid, but they already do so much around the castle that I do not want to bother them.

But I miss Sam. She is one of my favorite workers here. She is young to be working at the palace, but we have some of the best playtimes ever! She lets me be the knight in shining armor and she is my princess I must save. I only failed her once when my grandfather brought us cookies. I have apologized on multiple occasions, but someone must have their priorities straight around here.

I turn to my window to see the moon is half full. It is so beautiful at night. Especially when there are stars that smile at you surrounding it. Some kids like the daytime because there're afraid darkness but I love the night because of the darkness is when the true light comes out.
