XiaoZhan loved the sea. Ever since he was a child he loved coming to see the the waves crashing onto the shore, especially since he lived near the mountains where an infinite blue horizon was impossible to see. Now that he was grown up, he had the means to come to the sea as often as he wanted.
It was dark, and the clouds were blocking the moon's soft light, but XiaoZhan found himself walking barefoot along the beach's smooth sand. It was a small beach located at the edge of the country. He listened to the sound of the waves and the wind. It was cold, but he didn't mind it one bit. This was what he loved. The bite of the freezing air on his skin and the infinite darkness that stretched before him.
The ocean was a dangerous and yet so curious creature.
As XiaoZhan moved along the empty beach, his eyes caught a dark figure just up ahead. He tilted his head in confusion. Was it a rock? With his cellphone's flashlight on, XiaoZhan moved forward to get a better look. It could have been a rock. Perhaps some debris. Maybe even a large patch of dead seaweed. However, it was none of that.
It was a merman.
XiaoZhan, at that moment, froze. Was it fake? Was it some dude who was somehow practicing his mermaid performance skills in the dead of the night? At a nowhere beach at that? When he finally got his senses together, he mustered enough courage to take a few more steps closer to flash his camera light on it.
No. It wasn't fake. That looked too real!
It was a merman. Although he couldn't see the creature's face, XiaoZhan was able to get a clear few of the shining blue scales of its long tale, beautifully reflecting the light from his phone. Another thing to note was that blue hair. At first, it seemed a pretty dark blue, but when the light flashed on it, it seemed to be almost holographic.
However, there was also another thing that drew XiaoZhan's attention. It was the stark stain of red on the merman's pale skin.
He was injured!
"Hey!" XiaoZhan dropped onto his knees in front of the mystical creature and rolled him over with his free hand. "Wake up! What happened—" oh.
Despite the sense of emergency that he was feeling, XiaoZhan couldn't help but note just how handsome this merman was. He was glad that those conspiracy videos trying to predict what mermaids looked like were wrong. The creature in front of him was just as breathtaking as the fairy tales told him.
XiaoZhan snapped out of his trance. He needed to think. What was he supposed to do in this situation? Forget the potential danger level that this merman can be— he was injured and it was within gege's self rules to always help someone in need. He didn't have any shelter nearby, his car was far away, and it wasn't like he could just call the ambulance for a... for a mermaid.
It didn't seem like the merman was going to wake up any time soon. Worried, XiaoZhan tried to drag the creature out of the water, but the moment he stopped touching water the merman jerked and hissed as if he was being burned.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" XiaoZhan brought him back into the water, heart beating from both fear and guilt.
He thought that would have woken up the merman, but it seemed that he was still knocked out. Now that he got a better view, XiaoZhan realized that the blood on his skin came from a deep and nasty gash running up his hip. That must hurt like fuck.
If XiaoZhan couldn't take him out of the water he must find the merman some place where he wouldn't be wacked by the waves. The tide was higher than ever and the waves were becoming violent. It was then he remembered that just at the end of the beach was a small cave. There— there was good.
