We were dating for about three months before I made him promise to never go, because I thought he was the one. Well, he wasn't. Two months later, walking down the alley towards my house, we got jumped. He had a knife in his boot that he pulled out to protect me while I hid behind the garbage cans and called the police. That wasn't enough protection for him, but it saved me. The two guys who tried to jump us both had guns. One of them pulled it out. Pulled the trigger. My love got hit in the gut. Then police sirens blared.
"Come on! Let's get out of here. The cops are coming. Let's leave the girl," the one that shot him said. They bolted west, down the alley.
Once they rounded the corner, I ran to him. Blood everywhere. I cradled his head in my lap. Held his hand.
"Mae, I love you. Don't forget that," he said.
"I love you too. Please, don't go. Please. Don't go. Don't- God dammit! No, no, no," I yelled through sobs. His breathing stopped. I closed his eyes and continued to cradle his head.
"Stay. Stay. Stay. Stay, God dammit. Please, stay."
Ten minutes later, the paramedics came. Separated us. Two different ambulances.
Lots of crying.
