"Ugh, stop crying and get over it." The girl in the mirror rolled her eyes.

Nicholas continued sobbing, "I don't understand. I did everything you told me to. Why do I still feel this way? Why don't I feel..." The boy wiped his tears.

Long red scars ran up and down his arms, his chest bound so tight he could barely breathe. Mounds of shorn hair surrounded him as he desperately shook the mirror in front of him.

The mirror girl just smirked and flipped her long, flowing hair. "Because no matter how much you wish. No matter how flat you make your chest or how deep you force your voice to be, deep down you know it doesn't matter. Deep down you know that you'll always be me."

A malicious laugh escaped the girl's lips as she snapped her fingers. Nicholas gasped in horror as his hair grew long from his scalp, his chest growing and bursting the bandages of his bindings. He turned to the mirror to confront the girl inside but all he saw was the girl's face staring back at him with an identical look of shock and horror. He collapsed onto the floor, crying. The girl's words echoed in his ear. No matter how hard he tried, he knew he could never be as masculine as the men he saw on TV and in magazines.

He punched the mirror.

The glass shattered, blood pouring from the broken skin of his knuckles.

"Hey Nick, is everything ok? I heard something shatter." The boy glanced at the door to see his boyfriend, Jacob. Nick looked back at the cracked mirror and let out a relieved sigh. It was all just a dream.

"Wait, what happened to your hand?" Nick looked down to see blood still oozing from his hand, bits of broken glass still wedged between his knuckles. The sight made him want to vomit. "I uh... punched the mirror," he responded, continuing to stare at the dripping blood.

Jacob nodded. "I'll be right back, I'm gonna get the first aid kit." And just as fast as he appeared, he was gone.

"So, what happened?"

Nick winced as long metal tweezers picked out another shard of glass. "Nothing really... Just some bad thoughts," he replied, looking down at the floor below him.

Jacob nodded and kissed the top of his head. "Well, if you need anything or wanna talk about it, I'll be here ok?"

Nick nodded as Jacob wrapped a clean white bandage around his hand. He looked up at the boy next to him, his eyes scanning the other's broad, muscular shoulders and defined jawline with a hint of stubble. Even as the other wrapped his arms around him, he couldn't help but feel... less than.

"Hey, Jacob?" Nick asked as he closed his eyes and listened to the other's steady heartbeat.

"Yes, my love?" The other asked, resting his chin on the boy's head and nuzzling into his curls.

"Do I uh... Do I look masculine enough to pass today?... Do you ever look at me and think I look like a-"

Jacob cupped the boy's cheeks and cut him off "Hey, no matter what goes on in your head you'll always be masculine enough for me." he smiles "Plus you just started T today darling. It'll take a few months until your body starts to visibly change." He kissed his lips and held him close. "Everything's gonna be ok"

Nick smiles and nodded, mumbling, "I love you so much," before eventually succumbing to the warm and welcoming arms of sleep.
