Well, looking back at this story, I remembered all the fun things him and I did. What fun we'd have and how he'd always make me smile when no one else could. I love you Luke Brooks.
So I was in high school at the time, we were both sophomores. After we we would get out of school, we'd walk home together, and talk about our days.
"Bye Luke." I waved as I watched him walk up his front porch steps.
"Bye Lex." He said, "Can I come over later before dinner? Parents aren't home and I was wondering if you could help me with my algebra homework."
"Sure. See ya then." I replied. I walked a little farther until I reached my house, grabbing the newspaper and going through the garage. Quickly, I walked into my garden in the backyard and picked one tulip, my mother's favorite, and brought it up to my room, leaving it with the rest of the many tulips on my dresser. Each tulip symbolized a day I have been without my mom, my savior, my heart.
I set my homework on the kitchen table, and grabbed a poptart. I was flipping through the pages of my history textbook, until I heard talking in the basement. I quietly sauntered down the stairs, peeking over the railing. I saw my father, with his friend Michael, working on a person. Doing their makeup and hair, and quietly whsipering to eachother.
"I think she's done." Michael said, putting down the makeup brushes and looking up at my dad.
"Alright. Let's put her in." He said, putting his hands under the patient, and so did Michael.
"One, two, three." They counted, carefully lifting up the woman and placing her in a delicate pure white casket. They gave one last look, and shut the top.
I loudly cleared my throat as they both turned around.
"Oh Alexia! I told you not to come down here when we're working." My dad scolded. I rolled my eyes.
"When's the service?" I asked, glancing over at the casket.
"Saturday. Tomorrow. Why?"
"I don't know, I was just wondering. Luke is coming over later to do homework, is that okay?"
"Well Michael and I are going to go out to get dinner so we won't be here. We're leaving soon, you two better not do anything stupid."
"Of course not dad." I said, rolling my eyes again. Luke and I have never 'done anything stupid' because we are too close of friends. Luke's too good for me anyway.
Just in case you haven't caught on (lol) my house is a home/funeral pollar. We hold funerals and memorial services in the living room, and in the basement is where my dad and Michael dress and fix up the dead. It's kind of weird to think about, ya know, sleeping in a house where dead people are, but after so many years, I've been used to it. I remember when we held my mom's memorial service there...
Anyways, when my dad and Michael left, Luke soon came over with his math books and I ordered pizza for us since I almost burned down the house trying to microwave popcorn once.
"So what do you need help on?" I asked. I helped Luke finish up his homework for the weekend, and since it was so late and my dad wasn't home yet, I offered for Luke to just stay for the night.
"Alexia?" Luke said, as we laid on the couches in the family room.
"Yeah?"
"Am I your best friend?"
"Of course Luke. Why?"
"I don't know. Just wondering. Just remember Lex, I will always be here for you. Love you."
"Thanks Luke. You too, love you."
Luke smiled and I smiled back, just before I shut off the lights and fell asleep.
