“VENICE! Breakfast is ready!” Dad shouted, I did my morning routines and got out of my room, “what’s for breakfast Dad?” I can still see him cooking, based on what I smell, bacon, pancakes and eggs, yum! “Aba, bilis bilisan mo at baka ma-late ka pa sa pasok ng ate mo!” As if on cue, the doorbell rang, napa kunot ang noo ko at tumingin kay Dad, may bsisita kaya siya? Kumunot rin ang noo niya at nangususap, agad akong nag-taka, who could it be? Dad opened the door and it revealed a curse.
“Hi tito! Hi sissy! Guess what?” energetic na tanong ni Sharri, a curse indeed. “What?” I asked her, “Sinusundo ka namin! Duh?” I chuckled with disbelief, really? I looked at the person behind her and saw Emma, Karina, Elena, and a girl I don't know, who could that be? “Veronica, uhm, I don't know if makikilala mo siya, but she,” Elena pointed at the girl beside her, which is I don’t know who, “Dani, nahihiya lang siya lumapit kasi hindi raw siya nakapunta nung nasa hospital bed ka.” Dani slapped her arm a bit, “ano ba!” she whispered threateningly, she walked forward.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t come, it's just that our family was on the edge of breaking apart, and my b-boyfriend was just about to—” she was about to cry and I saw anxiety in her face, I felt that to. I hugged her to stop her, “hush now Dani, it’s fine, I’m here okay?” she answered with a sob, I patted her back, “I–I’m sorry, I just mis-missed my bestfriend!” she answered between the sobs. So, they’re bestfriends?
_______________________________________________TODAY was no ordinary day nandito kami sa tapat ng ‘Protacio Alonzo University' kung saan pumapasok si Veronica, they’ve told me along the way that this school was built by the great Dr. Jose Rizal's ancestors, and they are the number one university in Calamba, Laguna, when it comes to Law, Criminology, Architecture, and Engineering. I could’ve just studied here with ate. I was saddened by the thought.
When I entered the gate I saw different buildings, some are small and some are big, “there!” turo ni Sharri sa isang malaking building habang nag lalakad, the biggest? Maybe, “yan ang Archi building, and that,” turo niya sa tabi nito na hindi naman kasing laki ng Archi, “business, yan and ayun!” turo naman niya sa isa pang building na halos kasing laki ng Archi, “Engineering yan!” and here, huminto na kami sa paglalakad, “is our building!” kinuyom ang kamao at inilagay sa dibdib niya, “we abide, we create and protect what?” energetic na tanong nito samin, “Law,” masayang tugon nilang lahat maliban kay Emma na parang tamad sa buhay.
“NGAYONG araw since homeroom lang tayo, dahil three months nalang at graduation na at next week will be your graduation picture, and next next week will be your finals.” He inhaled deeply, “based on sa lahat nang napag aralan natin, I want all of you to create a law that is a part of yourself but,” he looked around, “is applicable to our country, well this is just for fun! I hope all of you would cooperate.” I don’t know what to do, hindi ko naman field 'to! “And when you finish I want you to say 'it is I' and then your full name plus the credential, Atty, provided by my degree, I hereby publish this law and shall be abided by all of you.”
A part of me that can be applicable to the country? Well I’ve got a part of me that is lost, and that is ate, right! Ate!
A few minutes passed and Prof. Alarcon, well that’s his name that my seatmate said earlier, the first one to introduce was my guy classmate na mukhang gago, wearing three consecutive earrings from the left ear and two cartilage bull-ring earrings to the right, a bottom lip piercing, he has a lean body and eyes that can pierce your soul. Munggago.
“I want to create a law that allows every child under their parents supervision to have a 'say' to what they want and what they could dream, and that is the No Controlled Child Policy, so that they are allowed to dream–” he was stopped when Prof. Alarcon stood up,
“hindi ba't nagagawa na iyan ng kabataan ngayon?” I looked at the guy, “well, they have a 'say' to what they want, but they don’t have the 'do', yes kaya nilang magsabi ng pangarap nila but some kids, especially those who grew from authoritarian parents don’t,” tumingin siya kay Prof. Alarcon,
“right, sir?” dumilim ang tingin ni Prof, hmm, something seems to be off the line, “but parent’s like them, only wants the best for their sons aren’t the—” napatigil siya dahil kay guy sa harap, “best? Yes you want the best, gano'n naman lagi 'di ba? You may be the best lawyer in town but with that thinking of yours? You'll never be the best father for your son.” He fixed his vest,
“I, Atty. Jethro Altasair Alarcon, provided by my degree, I hereby publish this law and shall be abided by all of you.” He got his things and left. Alarcon? Hmm interesting! Prof looked so disappointed. He called another student at the back. And it was Sharri.
“uhm, I want to create a law that allows every person to wear what they want with no judgements, and that is Fashion Freedom bill, and it let’s you wear what you want form plain shirts to swimsuits, it is I, Atty. Sharri Aries Abuelda, provided by my degree, I hereby publish this law and shall be abided by all of you”
she sat down, “excuses, Ms. Abuelda, but your law isn’t feasible—” Sharri stood up again, “You told us it’s just for fun, didn't you?” She sat on her chair, well that’s Sharri, afterall she aced the Philosophy finals exam on her first year, apparently, she crashed course to law.
"Ms. Buendia, ikaw na." I stood up, "i want to create a law that makes siblings bind with each other and never to be separated, The Sibling Act, this is for those sibling to be unbreakable, since nowadays sibglings usually fight because of what?" I looked around, "lack of communication, and eventually looses love! it is I, Atty. Veronica Eunice Buendia, provided by my degree, I hereby publish this law and shall be abided by all of you" i sat down.
A few students were called and the bell rang, I was about to step outside when someone called me, or my sister? “meet me in my office,Ms. Buendia.” Faculty? Why? I told Sharri, Elena, and Emma to wait for me in the cafeteria.
As I walked down the corridor I saw most of the students have hatred in their eyes, but why? Did they hate ate? Did ate do something?
Did they hate ate so much? Bakit? Paano? The fuck? Sa bait ng ate ko may magagalit pa sa kaniya?
I entered Prof. Alarcon's faculty, “Ms. Veronica Eunice Buendia! Or should I call you Venice Monica Buendia?” he smirked.
Fuck
