"Moksha sweetie hurry up and unlock the door."
My mom insisted on helping me move in. Of course, it was just to come back to England again but I appreciated the help all the same. We pretty much packed our combined four suitcases with my stuff so my mom only had enough clothes to stay for a couple of days.
"Ok ok I'm coming. Just put the suitcase on my bed and I can unpack myself later." I replied.
"Make sure you don't forget about the case of S. Pellegrino we bought at the airport. I left it in the communal kitchen downstairs. Now you get out of here and explore by yourself. I've seen the campus enough times and I need to take a nap."
I just nodded and left her in my room. Apparently, at Oxford, everyone got a single. Granted, it was really small but a single is a single. I saw a couple of my floormates when left my room which just reminded me how at university, the dorms aren't gendered like they were at Exeter.
The first thing I did when I stepped outside was call my friends. Ela, Anna, and Chieko were all still on their summer vacation and we all got to go on a cross country road trip before I left for England. The phone rang twice and Ela and Chieko picked up.
"Moksha!" they both said together.
"Guys I'm scared. I haven't had to make new friends since prep year and I don't know how to do it."
"Who said we were friends?" Ela responded.
"Guys I'm being serious. How do I make friends?"
"I don't know just go to the dining hall and sit down. Not alone though because then you look like a loser." Chieko said.
I must have walked too far away from my dorm then because the connection failed and I could no longer hear my friends. Frustrated, I just hung up and started walking. I figured I would use this time to find the bookstore to buy my textbooks. I wrestled around with majors for a while before settling on international law after taking a really cool English elective. I'm so excited to start classes in a few days and finally learn about something I actually care about.
After a couple of minutes of wandering around, I finally found the bookstore. It started to rain so I rushed inside.
"Ahhhwhahoufuosj" I heard with a thud on the ground.
"OhmygoshdidIhityouwiththedoorohmygoodnessIamsosososorryareyouok?" I blurted. Great. Now I was the first year with an American accent who attacked someone with a door.
"No worries. Just a little bump that's all."
I looked to see who I had hit. She was a pale Asian girl with long curled hair and about my height. She was sweet looking and extremely pretty. (Bear with me I promise I'm not queerbaiting you)
"Oh thank god. I'm Moksha by the way."
"Oh you're American. Very nice. I'm Danny by the way. Where are you from?" She asked in her very British accent.
"I'm from New York. Long Island actually. It's close to the city. What about you?"
"My house is in Yorkshire but I spent most of my schooling in London. It wasn't a bad school so a couple of my classmates are also at Oxford with me too."
As if on cue, a man came over with an armful of textbooks and handed half the stack to Danny.
"Ok Danny so here are your very heavy boo- Who's this?"He said. He was a tall white man with Danny's accent. The most interesting part was his outfit though. He wasn't dressed like the posh people around England but in a more rocker look. He wore a band tee tucked into some black ripped jeans which was the most causal look I've seen since the airport.
Danny stepped in. "This is Moksha. She's from America and just accidentally hit me with the door. And Moksha, this is Peyton, my boyfriend. He's one of the ones that came from my high school. Oh we're both first years by the way."
"Oh yeah I'm a first year too. And nice to meet you Peyton." I replied.
After we finished the introductions, I just kind of stuck around them in the store talking about our lives and everything to do with ourselves while getting my textbooks. It turned out that Danny was here for physics and math and Peyton was here for music production which explained his outfit choice. Danny was also in the same dorm as me which was exciting.
"Hey we were about to go get some lunch after this. Would you like to join?" Danny said.
"I'm sorry, wouldn't I be third wheeling you guys?" I asked.
"Not at all. We're not like a mushy gushy couple. We've been together for years so we're waaaayyy past that stage. We'll be just like your normal friends. And also we have no idea where we're going or what places will be good so we might as well make a new friend while exploring." She replied.
"Ok if you say so. I think I walked past this burrito place on my way here but you'll have to pull up the directions cause I don't remember them."
We headed out of the store. The rain that had started before had already subsided and the sun was starting to peak out again. As we were walking, I felt my phone buzz in my front pocket. It was a text from Akili. We started texting after graduation on and off and I feel that we've gotten closer since then.
I saw on your story that you landed in Oxford. How is it so far? Meet anyone? How's the weather?
I tried answering his text but it wouldn't go through because of the bad connection. I'd just have to wait until the restaurant to send it.
At the restaurant, Danny, Peyton, and I continued talking and joking with each other. It seems that I had made my first two friends. Kinda sucks that they're dating each other but at least they were friends. That's progress. The burritos were also pretty good. We all agreed that we'd have to come back to try more things on the menu. After I was full I headed back to the dorm with Danny while Peyton left turned a corner a block beforehand. They really weren't like a cringy lovey-dovey couple. It was just like two best guy and girl friends and it was really refreshing. After dropping off Danny on the second floor, I walked up two more to get to my room where my mom would have to be woken up so I can unpack. Surprisingly, I was no longer as nervous as I was before. Everything would be ok and I was actually kind of excited.
