“And you want me to jump across …that?” I said, staring at the huge gap in between the buildings. I probably shouldn’t have followed a guy around that I didn’t even know, but I never thought he would lead me to an underground city. It was amazing, that was for sure. The sky was lit like the place had it’s own sun. There was a look about it too… like it was from a few centuries ago. The buildings were just so tall and made of jewels, which brings me to back to the fact that I have to jump from one ledge to the next. It was impossible to do that.

“It’s pole vaulting, not jumping. C’mon, it’s a piece of cake.” Nicolai was grinning from the other side. “Don’t be such a wimp!”

My gaze went to the ground. The few hundred feet I would be falling if I tried definitely guarantee death. “I don’t think I’m ready to die!” I shouted from the ledge. The fact that my upper body strength was zilch didn’t help my odds of surviving.

“Well, then I’d suggest you jump, because you can’t get out the same way we came in. I guess you’ll just starve over there, if you don’t.” He really was an awful person, but he was kind of fun.

“Why didn’t you tell me that before you made me travel through the sewer?”  Now, I was pacing back and forth with the pole in my hands. There really wasn’t any other way out.  The thought of starving wasn’t very appealing either. “It was gross, and I smell like…ugh.”

“If you want a shower you’ll hurry up.” He was actually bribing me with a shower. It was working too. I reeked of…well, crap.

“Fine! I’m coming, but if I die, I blame you.”  I backed up really far with the pole.

All I needed was a little speed, right? When I was satisfied with how far I had to run, I took a deep breath. My heart was racing. Trying my best to ignore it, I race towards the edge or the building. I have a little bit more of the stretch until the end. Speed was the one thing I didn’t need any more. I had a ton of it. All too soon the ledge was before me. My hands gripped the pole harder. Digging it into the cement, I vaulted up into the air. For a moment, it felt like I was just suspended in the sky. It was like I was just there, floating.  I was free. That didn’t last for long.  I was falling.

My limbs were flailing around frantically. This was how I was going to die. It was all, because I didn’t listen to “never talk to strangers” thing. It was all over when I landed with a thunk. I had no doubt about it. I was dead. I didn’t have the guts to open my eyes though.

Something poked me. “Hey, you can open your eyes now.”

It was Nicolai. He looked like he was about the burst out laughing. Huh, so I hadn’t died after all. I glanced back to see the pole lying on the top of the other building. “I’m awesome!” I grinned triumphantly.

“Ha, you wish.  It was like watching a cow a fly. Not graceful at all. Next time I think we should just leave you on the other side, and spare our eyes the ugliness.” Nicolai seemed like he totally switched personalities. That was weird.

“That’s not nice.” To my left there was another Nicolai.

“…I think, I’ve lost my mind.” I mumbled to myself, and then stood up.

“Nah, it was probably already gone.” I heard the mean Nicolai comment.

“Nicolai, I thought you were nice.” I stuck my tongue out at him. This was just too weird. He just changed all of a sudden, not to mention duplicated. Now, I saw a few other guys coming through the door, which seemed to lead down stairs somewhere.

“I’m Nicolai.” The one to my left chuckled. “That’s Malachi, my brother. Over there would be the rest of us.”

The Malachi person was an exact copy of Nicolai. That little encounter with him was enough to know that he wasn’t at all like Nicolai. Nic was nice and fun. Malachi seemed cynical. I frowned. This was going to be fun… “And who are you guys?” I smiled at the boys of all different ages standing over on the other side of the roof.

“They’re the rest of our group.” Malachi nodded towards them.  The rest of their group was staring at me like I was a freak.

“Don’t mind them. They’re just surprised that a girl actually made it across.” Another guy was coming over. He was one of the older ones. “I’m Zeph.” Zeph turned his attention to Nicolai. “Did you get the jewel?”

Nicolai’s grin widened. “Yes sir. It’s right here.” He pulled out a huge ruby out of his pocket. What I wanted to know was how it hit in there… or how he got it for that matter.

“Wait, hold on! Are you guys thieves or something?” I gawked at them.

A mischievous grin played across all three of their faces. What had I gotten myself into now? Somehow life was starting to get interesting. “Heh, some of the best.”
