I See Fire

She heard the tires approaching on the tarmac, the red and blue lights reflecting in the puddles forming from the rain, and the ear-piercing screech of the sirens.

Her feet reluctantly halted their movement down the barren road, knowing that she could not escape now. Time seemed to progress slowly; from the arrival of the police to the halt in her steps.

The now saturated, red dress clung to her body, absorbing droplets of rain that tumbled down her chest and arms. Her hair was now a mess, holding masses of water at its tips. The makeup from her eyes dripped down her pale cheeks like blackened tears, but her face showed not emotion. Her shoes dangled from her fingertips by their thin straps, instead of being fastened to her feet. Accepting her fate, she turned to face the cars behind her, raising her hands to the sides of her head as two officers grasped her arms and hauled her to the back of one of the cars.
