There were only two candles left to light, so she took another match and lit them up. Of course, it was still pretty dark, but Laura and her family were used to this, since power failure was a common occurrence here. There was no electricity in the whole neighbourhood and darkness filled the small village once again. Everyone believed that there was absolutely nothing to worry about. Laura thought so as well. Now there wouldn't be either, if it wasn't different this time...
'I'm going to sleep!', Laura yelled from upstairs. 'Finished homework already?', her father replied. Laura thought for a second and then answered: 'There is just a little project I'll have to work on tomorrow. No big deal.' Her dad smiled at her from down the stairwell. 'Well then... Good night, sweetie!' Laura waved at her father, mother and sister and went to her room that was only lit by one candle. Laura laid down in her bed and blew the candle out. She had almost fallen asleep, when she heard a real strange noise... It sounded like some sort of far-distant howl, but it was already gone the moment after she noticed it. She looked around. Even though the power was out, thus no glowing street lamps, Laura could still see the eerie shadows of a tree's branches. The shadows made by moonlight danced back and forth in her room and with the wind rustling through the bushes as if they had a life of their own, it made the night somewhat... spooky. Luckily, Laura fell asleep really quickly anyway. Little did she know, though, that at one point, someone... or something... was watching her sleep. The creature looked at her through the window and a gap between the curtains without even making the slightest sound.
It was half past midnight when Laura woke up again. She needed to go to the toilet. Silently, she went downstairs. 'Everyone is now sleeping too', she thought. 'I shouldn't wake them up.' After she finished, she went back to her room. Laura didn't even reach her bed, before she heard the creepy howling again, although this time it sounded much closer and much longer. It sent shivers down her spine and she decided to wake up her parents to tell them about it. However, when she opened the door to her parent's room, her heart skipped a beat... or even more. 'Mom?! Dad?!', she shouted through the room. She got no answer, because her parents weren't there. They were gone. Laura rushed to her sister's room, but she wasn't there either. 'What's happening? Where's my family' Laura cried scared. Were they in danger? If so, she had to find them. Suddenly, she heard the front door banging against the doorpost. With the hope that it was her parents and sister, she ran towards it. The disappointment was therefore huge, when she figured out it was just the wind that had slammed the door shut. Laura was wondering where her family could be and why the door was left open, until... Blood stains were spread all across the entire doormat and the walls surrounding it and once she saw this, she freaked out for real. Desperately, she headed outside to get help. 'Wait... What?', she then whispered. Something was odd. There was definitely something wrong. Really, really wrong.
The streets were empty. It was dead outside and inside of every house, which normally wouldn't be that strange at this time, but Laura knew it was extremely quiet... Too quiet. It was as if the village had been deserted for decades. The next moment Laura heard a loud screech coming her way. She quickly hid behind her neighbours' house and noticed a window that was left ajar. Laura crept inside and called out for help, but nobody was to be found, just like inside the house after that and the one after that. Laura couldn't believe that this was happening. She didn't even find one single person. She was the only one around. Did the people vanish into thin air, because what else could be a logical explanation for all this? Then she heard the loud screech once again. This time, she peeked through the front door of her friend's house. What she perceived, was unbelievable. A living nightmare. The most terrible thing she had ever witnessed. 'My eyes must be deceiving me', Laura hoped. Out there on the street, three gigantic monsters walked between the houses. They looked like the most horrifying things she could imagine and were covered in the blood of the villagers. One even had flesh hanging out of its mouth. Laura's body froze straight away and it took some time before she could think again. She didn't know what to do. Those monsters had eaten the people of the village and probably her family too. She couldn't give up just yet, though. Maybe she'd still find them somewhere, while they were trying to find her. As she started to walk slowly and carefully towards her house, Laura noticed that the monsters were doing the same thing. She had to hurry. What if her parents and sister were back home and didn't know that the monsters were coming their way?
The monsters arrived at her house, which meant she couldn't get in now, so she hid behind her neighbours' house once again. However, when she didn't hear anything for a very long time, she decided to take a look. The monsters seemed to have disappeared and Laura sneaked inside her house... only to find her parents and sister standing right in front of her... covered in blood.
At first, Laura wanted to cheer out loud, run to her family and embrace them, but it only took her a few seconds to understand that this couldn't be right. Suddenly, her father, mother and sister started to laugh, although they didn't do it in a happy way, but rather in an evil way. Poor Laura didn't know what was going on. Her father then said: 'Oh, Laura... We were waiting for you.' What was he talking about? And suddenly it hit Laura. 'A-Are y-you the m-m-monsters?!', she stuttered. 'Not very kind of you, but if that's what you call it... We just love to eat some delicious people once in a while', her mother laughed. 'But a-aren't you humans, l-like m-me?', Laura asked. She was about to barf from the disturbing smell that was in the room. 'Oh, well. You see, honey, you're actually not our daughter', her father said calmly. 'What?!', Laura shouted. 'You were just our gateway to this village. We always kidnap a child, kill its parents and then take care of it for that purpose', her father explained. 'We do that every time we move to a new village to devour eventually.' Laura started to sob uncontrollably. This had to be a nightmare. She could wake up any second now and forget about this awful dream. But everything stayed the same. Everything was happening for real. Then her mother said: 'And we raise the child like all parents would do, until we don't need it anymore...' Tears ran down her face like a waterfall now and Laura's heart beat faster than ever before. 'We do it the same way every time. Cut off the power, so there's no communication possible with the outside world, transform into our true form, release a gas that makes everybody unconscious and then simply eat every single human being', her sister told her. Her father continued: 'However, this gas doesn't always work on everyone and neither did it work on you, apparently. Now you have been our little girl for years, though. So for that...' Desperately Laura thought: 'You will spare me?' Unfortunately, the next thing her mother said, was much like the total opposite. '... you'll be our special dessert.'
With that, Laura's last hope faded away and her mind went blank, as her "family" raced towards her. Then everything went black... Forever.
