Austin opened the back door for me and we both got in the back seat.
" You know how to get there right?" Christian asks
"Yeah" I say, " you know where that tobacco shop is?"
Austin looks up "The one across from--"
"Taco casa😍" we both say at the same time.
We look at each other and laugh silently.
When we used to talk the highlight of most of our conversations was taco casa. It's like the best taco place ever to exist but it only exists in Alabama.
So every time I visit t-town I eat there for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Christian looks at us through the rearview mirror.
" yeah I know where that's at" he says
" there's a neighborhood right next to it" I say "it'll be the first house you see"
The neighborhood wasn't really a neighborhood. It's more just hood. The projects.
But it's where gramma lived for 14 years and to me its home.
It didn't take long for us to get there. And once we pulled up I front of her door, Austin glanced my way
". . . So, how we gonna talk after this?"
Hmm ...
"Well . . . Maybe I can call u from gramma's phone sometimes if you give me your #. . . Again." I say.
Christian gave me a pen but we didn't have any paper so I wrote his number on my arm.
Then I thanked Christian for the ride before sliding out of the car with my stuff and walking up to the red door with the silver A on it.
I hesitate before knocking.
Gramma doesn't usually lock the door but I knock anyway.
And I'm so glad that I did because the woman who answered the door was not my gramma.
She was young. She wore a bonnet and a white tank top with gray tights.
It might be one of uncle boris' "friends", I thought.
"Can I help you girl?" She said.
" umm... yeah. I'm looking for Dale Fowler. . ."
The woman swayed a bit and gave me a lazy look.
" No. She don't live here no-mo" she said slurring her words.
Then without warning she slammed the door in my face.
Not once had it occurred to me that this could be a possibility. She's lived here for so long.
That lady was obviously drunk and she could've just been tripping but when I turned to see if gramma's car was even there I didn't find it but I did see an old blue truck and a black Nissan next to it. The Nissan was Christian's car. They were still there.
I walk back towards the car.
What am I gonna do now. . .
I don't know anyone else's address and I can't call anyone. The only numbers I can remember are my parents. But I can't call them. They probably wouldn't be of much help right now 😔
I open the back door of Christian's car.
"Why are yawl still here?" I ask
" just in case. . . But what happened?" Christian says.
" (sigh) idk I guess she moved. . . I- I don't know what to do. . . I don't know where she went😟"
I was on the verge of crying but I held it this time I cant cry in front of him again."
"Its okay Nikole. You can call her. do you know her number?" Austin says.
"No"
"Well you said you were walking from your cuz' house." Christian says "just tell me how to get there and I'll take you back"😶
Austin turned to look at me. I didn't want to look back but he wasn't gonna look away If i didn't.
So I did. He raised an eyebrow 🤨
Ugh " I lied about that..." I confess to Christian. " I. . . Um. . ."
"You umm what??"
Austin stepped in before I could say sum stupid.
"She don't wanna talk abt it right now. (Sighs)... just take us home"
...
What he means home???
I didn't ask I was too tired.
I really haven't slept in 3 days so I took now as a chance.😪😴😴😴
