One of the hardest things to do in life is to overcome regret. You would stay up nearly all night just going over the dumbest things you've done. You would beat yourself over how embarrassing or stupid it was and just wish you could redo it all.
Regret is terrifying. It comes and never leaves until we accept it, but even then it haunts us.
One of the hardest things to do in life is love. It's both easy and hard to love someone. Are you doing it right? Are they happy? Am I happy? You ask yourself many questions, some have an answer, some don't. Then, if it doesn't work out or your time is up, you get heartbroken. You fall into despair and ponder on the happy times.
Love is terrifying. It comes and goes, but is never the same.
When Sans fought the human, all he could do was contemplate what went wrong. Did he not protect them? They are alive, seeing as they are covered in dust and standing before him.
Did the humans care that they took lives? He can't tell. Their eyes were always clouded, always in a moment of fear. Who wouldn't be afraid when you're surrounded by monsters you thought were only a legend?
Sans has killed the human so many times that he starts to wonder why he cares. Why did he, the laziest monster underground, care that the human died more times than there are leaves on trees?
Why did Sans retreat to the happy memories he had with everyone? They all had smiles, quirks, and their moments. They all had a good life, he thinks until the human came.
He chuckled at their attempt to use Mercy. Like that would work. Mercy after Mercy, he still shut them down. Make them know how it felt when those monsters, whose dust covered their clothes, asked them for mercy. They started to get nasty. They started to get faster and the gap between them continued to be closed.
He finally concluded that sometimes, there are things worth fighting for, and some things to just give up on.
His grin started to become more strained as the human was swinging their knife towards him. He closed his eyes and thought back to the time when he and Papyrus built a snowman. He thought back to the time when he would tell jokes to the lady behind the door. The time talking with Alphys. Papyrus cooking with Undyne. Mettaton's shows that Papyrus loved.
He realized that this was something he didn't want to give up on. He saw crimson-red blood dripping down a white bone. He had struck the human through the heart.
When he opened his eyes, he saw the familiar ceiling and messy room. He sighed as he rolled out of bed and carried out the routine.
When the human walked through the door, he watched, like usual. When he offered his hand, they ignored it. The dust-covered clothes and hands signaled another genocide run. Oh, joy.
Again, the once golden walls and floor were stained with red. He did his duty. Defend the King, fine, fight the kid? Well, he was more than glad to.
The human still fought him. He decided to have some fun. He offered Mercy. They accepted it after some hesitation. When he offered a hug, they looked suspicious but caved in. Then, when they apologized, he chuckled.
"That's nice"
Then the human was killed. Again and again, they died at his hands.
Then he managed to get himself killed. He got caught off guard and was slashed on his chest.
