Slightly scary stuff ahead, reader advised. Enjoy tho ;))

An empty field.

That's what she saw.

Stars were sparkling up in the sky, and for a moment, she almost felt at ease. The cold breeze ruffled her fur in sync with the short grass that was covering the ground, and a soft howl tickled her ears. She took a deep breath as she closed her eyes.

The howl suddenly stopped, leaving only an unsettling silence behind. She quickly opened her eyes and took a step forward. But what she expected to be the cold soil, was, in fact, red muddy liquid pooling at her paws.

She flinched when the metalic scent of blood invaded her nostrils. Not blood again!, she pleaded.

Terrified, she watched as the red liquid swallowed the grass whole and now clinged above her ankle. Yukina opened her mouth to scream, but her howl got caught in her throat when she felt something glueing to her leg.

A little wolf pup, this year's litter, was staring directly at her, eyes bugged out, hind legs broken and blood dripping down his muzzle, staining his silver coat. She knew exactly who it was, Sara's six months old cub, Ruko, which was mercilessly slain by one of the creature's loud-stick.

He then opened his mouth and spoke in an unusually cheerful and high voice, blood pouring out of his eyes and mouth. "You abandoned us, but it's no biggie. After you pay for what you did, you'll come play with us, right?"

Yukina noticed that behind him, other mutilated wolves were crawling towards her, through the river of blood, that was dangerously approaching her shoulder.
They deafeningly screeched, throwing at her insults of all sorts. "This is all your fault! If you would've told us of the prophecy, we wouldn't have died! It is your fault and you must pay for your crimes!"

They're right, it is all my fault. If only I would have warned them about this, they would've gotten out alive.

'It is all your fault. And you can do nothing about it. Give up, your life is the price. And you must pay it!'

That was all she heard before she woke up. Sweating and trembling. It was already dawn.

She whipped her head in Tomi's direction, he had just opened his eyes and winced when he tried moving his leg.

"No, don't move! You need to stay still, or your wound won't heal."

With his head still dizzy from being unconscious a whole night, he groggily asked her to inform him of the events from last night. She scooted closer to him, for it was already winter and the cold wouldn't do him any good in that state, and she burried her muzzle in the fur at his nape. She began telling him what happened the night before, without missing anything out, the memory still vivid in her mind. At every small detail from her experience, she would get flashbacks, tears rolled out of her eyes, salty and clear, like a never-ending mountain stream, wetting her brother's dirty pelt.

When she lifted her head to glance at her brother, whom had kept silent the entire time, she saw that his face was also stained by newly shed tears. He couldn't get up and scream and mourn properly his late family, because of his injury. So instead, he settled for turning his head and tucking it into Yukina's shoulder and they both began sobbing for hours on end, till the warmer noon of the winter came and started heating the stiff ground a little.

She cleaned his wound one last time before she went to catch something small before they would begin their long journey to the North.
The prey was even scarcer now, it was winter and a fire just took place and scared off all the game in that area.
She remembered then, she'd left the deer they caught the day before near the camp, and hoped it didn't get burnt or worse, the camp to be swarming with those horrible creatures. She and Tomi had decided to call them 'two-pawers'.

The moment she had reached the camp, she noticed that it was completely serene. The first set of trees that were circling the small clearing had burned down, leaving a cold white ash on the ground, where grass was supposed to grow in warmer seasons. It looked as if she had found a little patch of moon there. She inspected the deserted camp and she finally found the deer's carcass and brought it back to Tomi.

Even though their mood was grim, the thought of a big juicy meal sounded appealing to both of them.
They ate slowly, to let their stomaches adjust, and left some of it for tomorrow, when they would begin to head North.

But untill then, they'll need a good night's sleep. Neither of them slept well the night before, but now, with their bellies filled and the heat of one another, they ventured to a more restful sleep.

I know todays chapter was a bit depressing, but its part of the character development.

On a more cheerful note, i think my writings getting better chapter after chapter.
This story is more like an experiment, i want to know my limits before i start working on my upcoming TaeKook fanfic.

That being said, i purple u all 💜
