“Here!” the memory of Seraphina throwing her the small toad flooded Roses mind. The soft echo of Seraphinas melodic, yet oh so weak, giggles bring her slowly back to reality. The cold shaking hand in her own. Seraphina lay ill in their shared bed, the crude reminder that they might not have the remainder of the life they had hoped for. No more of the picnics in the field, not raising the fresh calves in the barn, no more baking bread on early sundays. All of it could be gone in a matter of seconds. The beautiful Seraphina, the one every bachelor in town wanted but couldn't have. The satisfaction that was given to Rose upon winning her heart was eternal, but now? Everything she held dearly and close to her heart was sick, too sick. They both sincerely hoped Seraphina would get better within the last few weeks. But she had only fallen worse and worse. Almost as if their minds were connected, Seraphina called to her lover. “What's on your mind, love?” Seraphina knew exactly what was on her mind. Rose looked up from the cold hand she was so desperately trying to keep warm in her own, her eyes met the almost magical brown ones in front of her. She couldn't help the dreamy grin that took shape on her lips. “Rose?” the words fell from Seraphinas lips like smooth honey. Rose hums in response; with no intention to answer the alluring young woman in front of her. Rose shifted her glance higher, where she saw the devilishly charming black curls that fell along her face.
“I’ll miss you dearly. You know that dont you?” Seraphina says as gently as she can, moving weak hands the trace the jawline of her partner. Once again Rose is forced into her unwanted reality. Once again she meets the eyes of her most lovely sight with her own teary ones. “Don't. Never say that.” Rose says losing her always perfect composure, the energy left her with even the thought of losing the one she loved most. Seraphina was always of the sort to accept what was happening around her, in a dreamy sort of way. She was the most witty person Rose had ever known. Truly? It was Rose's favourite thing about her. It only rivaled her own, her lifelong victory in arguments came to an end when she met Seraphina. “Rose, it's going to happen, whether it be now or 60 years.” She says with a soft laugh that could make anyone lose the hardness of their heart in a matter of seconds. It was only a matter of moments before Rose completely lost all composure. She began to weep. As well as Seraphina knew the women in front of her, she didn't expect this. Not while she was here at least. Rose tried to justify herself but could find no words. Seraphina softly shushed Rose and weakly pulled her into her own arms. Rose had been through a lot, but never had she been in so much doubt. How could the universe take away the most beautiful creature it had ever created? Did it have the right? Rose sobs into her lover's chest as she's softly soothed. “There really is never going to be a way to get around this is there” she thought solemnly to herself. While she may have wept silently it didn't distract Seraphina from the fact that her lover was weeping in her arms. Her lover was in her arms. Possibly for the last time.
They'd meet again in another life right? Afterall, they were soulmates, right? Seraphinas hands rubbed soothing circles around Rose's back, they slowly trailed up and found their way into her hair. She hoped Rose could move on with all of her heart. That she would meet her again, in a better life, maybe a different world. Where their love was easier. Appreciated for what it was. Beautiful. This would be Seraphinas last euphoria. They whispered a soft I love you to one another, and drifted into a slumber, possibly their last.
