 Melody Granger

A few months later, life is still as hard as it was when we first came here. John White still isn’t back from England yet, but I think he will be back soon.

Chase and I are really good friends now. We are both learning how to fire guns and arrows. It’s quite fun, really, as long as you take out the part where I SUCK at aiming… (As in, my teacher now has a replacement leg thanks to me… But he was fairly nice about it, mostly…)

Chase is better at it than me, but boys are created to use those stuff! I’m only taking that class because I’m interested in those weapons. Otherwise, I would be taking those boring classes, sewing, embroidery, cooking. Just imagining those stuff makes me want to fall asleep.

Aw… Chase just shot an awesomely aimed arrow! I’m so going to kill him for that.

“Chase!” I yelled, “Stop being a show off! If you don’t, then I’ll kill you!” (In my dreams.)

Chase immediately grabbed another arrow and shot it. He missed by a few kilometers.

“Thanks!” I told him, and then ran off to my house.

When I got to my house, I knocked on the door, no one answered. I knocked again. Still no one answered to the knocks. I turned the knob, it opened easily. It wasn’t locked. I hesitated for a moment, then walked inside. I looked around, nothing had changed since this morning when I left for archery and shooting class, and then I saw it.

There was a note on the dining table. It read:

Dear Melody,

We have gone out to a meeting. We will be back by dinner.  If you are hungry, help yourself to anything you find.

Miss and love you,

Dad and Mom

“Huh?’ I asked myself. “Why would they go to a meeting? Nothing big I know about is going to happen. Are all of the grownups at the meeting?  I wonder which building they’re in… I’d love to eavesdrop on them!” These thoughts swirled around my head in a hurricane.

“Hmmm......” I said out loud.  “Since they aren’t keeping an eye on me, I could go do something special…!”

Chase York

It was 1:00 pm, when Melody and I went into the nearby woods.

‘What was the plan again?” I asked Melody.

“Ugh!” She told me. “Chase this is the billionth time you asked me that question!!!”

“So what’s the answer to my dumb question?” I asked her.

   “CHASE!” She yelled at me.

“Ok, ok, I’ll stop.” I said. “But only if you tell me the answer.”

She made an angry face at me, “Chase, you drive me crazy sometimes. Why did I bring you along again?”

I thought about it for a moment. I couldn’t remember any other time Melody was mad at me. “When was the last time you were mad at me again?”

This time, it was Melody who had to think about it. “Uh… Ok you win!” I could tell she was really frustrated with me. She even rolled her eyes when she thought I wasn’t looking.

We walked through the forest quietly for the rest of the way, me walking behind Melody because I still can’t remember where we were headed to.

When we were in front of a river, Melody stopped.

Her expression was grim. “Come on.” She said, and then waded into the water. I started to follow her, but after my first step into the water, I winced in pain of the ice-cold water that swirled violently around my legs.

Melody was already out by the time I took my fourth step. Determined not to be insulted by Melody, I started to run, but my careless actions lead to me tripping on an underwater root. I fell forward and slashed in the water that was so cold I thought I would never be warm again. For a moment, I was just coasting with the water currents. I pulled my head up; I could hear laughing from someone. I looked up and saw Melody laughing her head off a few feet away. Anger swelled up inside of me, and I chomped furiously forward, but stupidity took the best of me again. I tripped and fell for the second time, this time, as I emerged from the water, Melody was nowhere in sight.

I was so startled that I fell over AGAIN!! The only problem was, that there the currents were even stronger this time. I was caught off the very less balance I had, and swept towards the waterfall.

Chase York

I was swept off balance and forced to go over the waterfall. When I was just about to fall off, I found a tree branch that was still attached to a tree to hold on to. I quickly used all my strength to jump up high enough to reach that branch.

I made the jump. I held onto the branch tightly, hoping for me not to fall to my death. Sadly the fates had another idea…

A giant wave splashed with so much force onto my face that I almost slipped. Luckily, I didn’t. The only thing was that a lot of water went into my mouth. I hung my head down and coughed the water out.

When all of the water was out, I tightened my grip on the tree branch.

After a few more minutes (That felt like hours), my arms were getting sore and my hands and arms were aching. The waves were getting larger and that didn’t help my situation at all.

After a gigantic wave hit me with so much force that an elephant could have been knocked down, my hands gave up. And so I fell down the waterfall, and to my death…
