"Please don't let her be a victim of the system, don't let the system take her, please, please, don't let her end up like me, please don't let her end up like me, don't let her..." A heavily pregnant woman that was just involved in an accident weakly pleaded with the nurses that were swiftly pushing the stretcher she was on through the hospital doors while trying to wear the oxygen mask on her face.
By the looks of things she might not make it, and seeing –or hearing – the way the woman spoke, she knew.Down the corridor of St. Nicholas's hospital the Coltons were heading towards the door when they saw the accident victim or rather victims being rushed to the ICU.
Rebecca Colton stopped in her tracks halting the steps of her husband with her, and they silently watched as the nurses urgently transported the victim.
She had tears in her eyes as she listened to the pleas of the woman.Earlier on, she, accompanied by her husband, Marcus Colton, had an appointment with their family gynaecologist.
The specialist had just advised them on their other option – adopting. It's been 5 years since Rebecca was diagnosed with the tubal disease – a condition caused by any blockage or barrier for example endometriosis, fibroid, Pelvic Adhesive Disease or scarring, in or around the fallopian tube – and 8 years since she married the love of her life.
Ever since she discovered that not very faithful day, she had been heartbroken because having children was not exactly on her list the instant she got married – seeing as her husband and her took the first 3 years of their marriage to enjoy their married life – but it was something she looked forward to.
She envisaged a full house with children running about, she wanted four of them.
She felt shattered when she discovered that she couldn't get pregnant or have children the natural way. But there was hopeThe doctor had recommended several treatment and options, and every single one of them, they had tried, but each and every one of them was a failure. She had done 5 IVFs and at a time even took to surrogacy, but every time it failed, after a few weeks it'll come down.
The specialist had explained their other option to them, adopting. He said "For some couples adoption is a sort of good luck charm" he further stated that there were countless foster homes with children in need of parents. He told them to go home and think about it but that if they weren't interested and were still after children from their own loins they could still look into other options.
Standing by the corridor, she felt sincere sympathy for the woman. Here she was trying so hard to have a child, even if it is just one, and there was a woman who might not live to see her child.
She wept silently and her husband consoled her, knowing what she felt. Every time her heart broke, his shattered. He was hurt whenever she was hurt. He led her to their waiting car just outside the hospital door by the car park.
Their driver opened the door for them, shutting it immediately they got in. The moment they were seated, Marcus pulled Rebecca into his embrace running soothing fingers through her hair as tears rolled down her eyes."All i want is just one, doesn't that make me a failure, I can't even give us, give you, a complete family, i ..." She sobbed into his embrace.
"Shhh, I don't care about a baby, if you decide to stop trying, if you decide not to have one, I'm with you, I'll stand with and by you. You are my complete family" he cut in.
"What if you get tired of me, what if you wake up one day and realise that you want a mini you running around in the house, what if you become aware of the fact that our mansion is too big for just the two of us and it is too quiet without the sound of children. What if I'm not enough for you" she said raising her head to look into his eyes bearing her insecurities before him
"I could never get tired of you, I love you, with or without a child. I didn't get married to you because of children but because I love you, not having children would not change that fact. Having children with you is just an additional benefit, besides we could always adopt, you heard what the doctor said, there are millions of children who are in need of a loving and caring mother. If you want a child so badly, we could adopt" he said it lovingly
"But they wont have our blood, they wont be biologically related to us" she stated
"It doesn't matter, what matters is that we would love and cherish him, or her, or both, whichever you decide, like they're ours, it doesn't matter if they are biologically related to us or not. As long as we would love and accept them unconditionally"
"Do you think they'll love and accept us, me?"
"What is there not to love, any child would be lucky, blessed even, to have you as their mother, just as I'm blessed to have you as my wife"
"You really think so?" she asked
"I know so" he replied reassuringly kissing the top of her head as he pulled her into his embrace once more.
She relaxed in his hold and gave into the comfort he was offering through his embrace. In his embrace Rebecca's mind wandered to the incident they encountered in the hospital. She thought of the accident victim and the pleas the woman rendered to the nurses. She hoped the woman made it, even if it wasn't promising. She hoped the child was alright as well without any complications.
She felt distressed not knowing the fate of the woman and her child.
She made up her mind to go to the hospital later on to find out the fate of the woman and her child, then stop by the doctor's office for his recommendation on foster homes. That was what she would do. She'd made up her mind, she'd adopt, then they can be a complete family.
That brought a smile to her face. She snuggled deeper in Marcus's embrace and silently dosed off on their short journey to their house.
Phew, that was long, 1083 words. It wasn't thatttt hard, in away. I hope this chapter is long enough for you all, my lovely reader.
