There were 300 of them- 50 superior, 200 in the middle, and 50 inferior. At the top, the Evermore reigned supreme, seemingly in control. At the bottom lay the Dross, abused and left for dead by everyone above them. Of course, left for dead is a misnomer- Xardians were an "immortal until killed" race, with no need for food or water, or even air. Their only glory was their class system, determined by seniority and seniority alone. You would think in this case that the leader, being the oldest, would be able to exact change. You would think....
Somebody else was musing over this very thought- Kai'gul, the Evermore, sat hunched over on his bed, his blond hair falling down around him. He had pondered this question for years- why he was at the top, yet effectively powerless. He saw the lower classes suffering and knew it was his destiny to see them saved, yet he had no idea how to save anyone. How could he, one person, overthrow a system that spanned millions of years. With a sigh, he let his head drop down into his hands, his tan skin gleaming faintly in the low light. He was at the very reaches of a plan- a stupid plan, but a plan nonetheless. Something in him was saying that, to make a difference, a Xardian needed to grow up outside the system, away from all this injustice. Which, of course, in the end, could only mean one thing- he was going to steal a neonate.
