Chapter 1: The Mortal Cup

Fiddling her fingers nervously, Angel waits for Lucas to come back from the kitchen. The man had left the apartment's cozy living room to go make the two some hot chocolate. Hot chocolate - one of Angel's favorite things about the mundane world. She never knew about it before meeting him. Coffee and tea, sure, but the first time Lucas asked if she wanted hot chocolate, Angel responded with an insanely smart "why would I want melted chocolate?"

The movie playing on the tv is paused - another thing she'd never encountered before meeting him. Sure, she'd known about movies but there was no need for them in a world consisting of demons and fighting and fire. Lucas had shown her why mundanes love things that are so...well, mundane. Yes, nothing comes of it other than having new knowledge stored in your brain that you'll probably never use, but it's enjoyable. It can put a smile on your face without being in battle and can make you cry without seeing one of your loved ones hurt. And it's healthy. You can watch a comedy and laugh for hours when you may have not smiled in days. You can use a scene in which someone has to let go of someone they care for to release pent-up feelings of anger and sadness. And at the end of it all, it's all a movie. Something that's stored up, put back on a shelf, and forgotten about until the next time you want to view it. A story that isn't real, and yet makes the lives within it, even when lost, eternal.

Angel smiles delicately as she begins twirling her stele between her fingers. The silver adamas is decorated with flames that lick up the sides, seeming to caress the metal. The non-weapon always manages to ground the girl when she's in turmoil. Something about the feeling of the magical material it was created from paired with the fire she's made of. It's the two halves of her illustrated by a five-inch-long scribing tool. Something she can hold in her hands and inspect. Something to remind her that she's more than her struggles. Bring her back to her roots.

Today, like many days in the last month and a half, it serves as a tool to calm her nerves around her boyfriend. There's nothing wrong with the man; in fact, she holds more love for him than any other mundane she's ever met and even most shadowhunters and Downworlders. There are very few people she would die for before him. No, the problem has nothing to do with the twenty-year-old human pattering barefoot through the kitchen. It has to do with her.

For the past six weeks, Angel has started noticing things more and more. Things that are just not normal when you have a boyfriend, especially one as attractive as Lucas Harlow. Angel's found herself becoming distracted by women simply crossing the street. Becoming flustered when her female counterparts pin her during training. The way her breath catches in her throat when Izzy wears red lipstick and tight clothes and flips her hair or smirks. How she pays more attention to the girls in movies Lucas shows her, even when the men wear fewer clothes.

The more she notices these things, the worse it gets. Not only that, but she's starting to realize things have been this way her entire life without her noticing. Despite the fact that she's been attracted to boys and has always paid attention to them, it's becoming clear that the reason is more because that's the norm and not what she actually feels. She'd subscribed to a group mentality and hadn't been kicked off her dose until recently. When Angel thinks back, she sees the fleeting glances she'd steal when other girls trained without shirts or the too-long stares at their asses in comfortable leggings. She notices how despite always going after males, even in her imagination, subconsciously she's wanted something different.

Despite the facts that stare right at her face, Angel tries her hardest to push them away. She loves her boyfriend. Has loved her boyfriend the entire two years they've been together. Things with him are normal, and Angel just wants that back. To stop thinking about all of this and just pay attention to her loving, devoted boyfriend. Her loving, devoted boyfriend who just got back from the kitchen.
