July 2003

Violetta and Jade were walking down the street to Jade's house. Jade was dialing Marci's number on her cellphone. They began to talking to each other on the phone. Violetta listened on the call. Marci was busy with her new boyfriend Kevin. Jade hung up on the call. As they continue down the street, the girls saw a boy riding his bike down the street. He stopped in front of them. It was David Holt. He stared at Violetta and Jade.

"Hey girls!" He said. David looked over at Violetta. "Has it been a year already?" David asked Violetta.

"Yes, it is." Violetta answered. She looked at David.

"Off to the park. Maybe I will see you down there." David told the girls. He began to pedal his bike down the street.

"I think David likes you." Jade mentioned.

"What --" Violetta said. She was a little bit confused about Jade's comment.

"David is smitten over you." Jade repeated. "You haven't been here for a year. I've seen David ride his bike down the street pass your dad's house." She told Violetta.

"David lives up the street from us." Violetta replied. She walked over by the gate to Jade's house.

"Do you like him?" Jade asked Violetta. She came to the gate.

"Maybe as a friend. I'm not as boy crazy like you." Violetta answered.

"Friendship usually blooms into a relationship." Jade smirked. She opened the gate up with her hand.

"Oh Jay." Violetta sighed. When Violetta stepped on the brick walkway, she saw Jade's older brother Josh come out of the front door. He came down the walkway towards the girls.

"Hey." He said to them. Then he turned his attention to his little sister. "Mom needs you take the trash out later." Josh informed Jade.

"I will." Jade told him. She walked up to the front door.

Josh was two years older than Jade. He was tall and athletic build due to years of playing football and basketball during his high school years. While Jade had forest green eyes, Josh had hazel eyes. His hair was a sandy blond color. Also, Josh was a honor roll student. He had been elected to the National Honor Society for his senior year. Josh was handsome looking too. He glanced over to Violetta on the walkway.

"It's been another year already. Gaines, you are becoming a lady." He complimented her.

"I see you haven't changed much in a year." Violetta told him. She began to walk to the front door by Jade.

"You know. Genetics." Josh said shrugging his shoulders. He went over to his car. As he drove off to his friend's house, Josh looked in his side mirror at Violetta. He smiled at her.

Violetta turned towards Jade on the front porch. "Your brother is now on my list of weirdoes." She told Jade.

"Which spot he takes on the list?" Jade asked with a laugh.

"One." Violetta replied.

They went into the house. Jade's mother Anna was cleaning up her nursing work papers from the table. Jade's father Zack was watching television. It was the All Star Pro baseball game. Anna watched as her daughter walked in the house. She smiled at both girls. Jade and Violetta went upstairs to listen to music in Jade's room. Violetta laid down on Jade's bed. Jade followed her onto the bed. They were listening to the radio.

"Did Josh say anything to you?" Jade asked Violetta.

"Just been a year since he last saw me." Violetta answered. She turned her head towards Jade.
