FOUR
THE FIRST THING THAT CLARA did was try and FaceTime Harper — her best friend who had known her since the very beginning of middle school. The two girls were on the opposite ends of the social spectrum. Clara was social and popular, while Harper spent her time with three main people and wasn't well known around the school or in town. If anyone did know her name, it was for a bad reason.
Clara's parents had a dislike for her best friend. Of course they would.
Harper already had tattoos covering her arms, self-done piercings on her eyes and face and two colored hair — a bright red on one side, black on the other. She had done drugs before, skipped class constantly and was somehow always involved in trouble. That didn't make Clara love her any less. She had been there for her through everything. Awkward phases, family troubles, all of it.
"Why the hell are you calling me so early?" Harper groaned, rubbing her eyes. "Is anything wrong?"
Yes, no. Maybe.
"It's Theo." The girl kept her voice hushed, in case her parents could hear. Her bedroom door had already been locked and the walls were solid, but you never knew for sure.
Harper knew Theo pretty well — they had once been forced to be together in detention after school for a solid month for spray painting the bathrooms.
"Theo Parker?" Her head had perked up. "Like... the Theo Parker? The one who lives in your neighborhood?"
"Yes, that's him."
"Since when are you hanging out with guys like him?"
The brunette hung out with similar people, Harper being the odd one out. They all played sports, got good grades and had rich parents. It was just that all of them were absolute assholes. No matter what they always found something about you to try and blackmail you for; always tried to use you for your money; and never failed to make you feel like shit.
Despite the fact that Clara still hung out with them, Harper was her only true friend. The kids from school — Amelia, Jack and most of the cheerleading team — were only temporary. So in her friends eyes, hanging out with someone like Theo was a sudden change in behavior.
"Since yesterday," the girl told her. "It doesn't matter that much. I just need help on something and I don't know what to do."
"Did he ask you to be his fuck buddy?"
Oh. Clara didn't know that explaining the matter would be so easy.
