KOLBEN RIVER is dying. He has been ever since he was thirteen. Doctors said it was a terminal lung disease, and that the boy wouldn't live much longer. Months, maybe a few years, but he wouldn't live to see his twenty-first birthday.
Kolben didn't know how to describe the feeling of knowing that sooner or later, he's going to die. When he really went into thought, there was one word that always popped into his head: fear. He's always been afraid of death, and being diagnosed with a lung disease only worsened that fear.
At the point, he gave up on trying to be a people-pleaser. He stopped worrying about his grades, and started to focus more on trying to fulfill his dreams before he dies. And the only way he could do that was to make a bucket list. His parents suggested it days after he was diagnosed, but back then, he found it silly. He found himself living in an unrealistic fantasy that he'd bounce back and be healthy when he was thirteen.
Now that he was fifteen, that fantasy diminished. His bucket list was the one thing that made him happy. The amount of things he got away with because he was sick was incredible. It was full of many things that he'd been dreaming about since he was eight. Kolben planned on finishing the list. It was the one thing he wouldn't give up on.
Then he met Katie Cooper. She was visiting her friend, a box of donuts in her hand when she ran into the boy. Kolby would be lying if he said he didn't find her attractive. They both thought that'd be the last time they'd ever see each other again, but everything changed when Kolben decided that he wanted the whole high school experience.
Running into Katie Cooper again was probably the highlight of his day. Because from that day on, Katie and her best friend swore to help the boy finish his famous bucket list. He ended up falling for the blonde haired girl, and she fell for him too. Sadly for them, they both knew it wouldn't last long because of the heart breaking reality: Kolben River is dying.
