Sticky Notes
Winter break had finally ended and it was back to school. The time every student didn’t look forward to - except for the fact that they would get to regularly see their friends again but for Sooyeong it would be a good change of environment which would keep her mind occupied and away from her disastrous home life.
After missing her orientation for senior year which was the day after her father’s funeral she now trudged to the Principal's office to get her schedule as well as to sort out her admission.
Once she was done with the formalities she made her way through the crowded hallway where swarms of students flocked to get to their first class for the year but she continued to march on toward locker 116. For five long years that locker belonged to her and like everyone else’s locker, it held memories.
But as she neared the said locker, she couldn’t help but gasp at the sight. The entire front portion of the locker were loathed with countless sticky notes all of various colours. Her paced quickened and as she got nearer her eyes fell over little messages in different fonts written over each sticky note. She was appalled.
She stood frozen and stared from top to bottom. Her eyes gazed over each one in utter awe. There were a lot of encouraging messages which pulled on her heartstrings. A few of them read:
“Fighting! Sooyeong ah!”
“You’ll get through this!”
“Your father’s in a better place.”
“I remember when your dad helped my mom when she was sick. Thank you Soo unnie.”
“Stay healthy and take care of yourself!”
The tears formed in her eyes as she read each one. She couldn’t help but pull out her new black journal which she had purchased for the new school year and she pasted each one within the blank pages.
But as she removed one note at a time she came across a few rather harsh ones and at that moment in time she felt her heart being pulled out of her chest, then trampled upon. Those notes read:
“Some doctor your dad was, dying of an ailment.”
“Don’t expect the entire school to feel sorry for you.”
“Things seem to be much better now that he’s gone, don’t you think 'unnie'?”
She felt her body go weak especially at the last message. Her gut told her instantly it was from Ahro and the handwriting was a dead give away. A few tears rolled down her cheeks and a lump formed in her throat. She wondered how could people be so evil.
