Avery woke from her sleep with a violent start. Sweat stuck to her skin and her hands trembled where they lay in front of her.

Her dream had been anything but pleasant, filled with screams of agony and pleads for Avery to help. She closed her eyes tightly to rid herself of the image. She couldn't change the past, she could only
hope for a better future.

A loud bang at her door had her scrambling to stand next to her bed.

"Dr Masters wants you in his office in 20 minutes subject 3! You better be on time today." the gruff voice of one of the guards broke through the silence in her room.

Moving as quick as she could, she made a beeline for the bathroom. No way was she not having a shower, she didn't care if she was late. There wasn't much else they could do to hurt her.

Once in the shower, she let her thoughts wander. She was glad for what little freedom here she had. Her own room, en-suite bathroom and they bought her everything she needed. She supposed it was a way to make them feel welcome, to make them more co-operative. But she knew she would never be truly happy as long as she wasn't free.

She let her head fall back against the cool wall in the shower. The guilt of what she had done the previous day was eating her, the news had came in last night that the agents had caught the Sons of Ipswich thanks to her tip that they would head to the lighthouse.

Avery knew she wasn't a good person, unlike her overly nice best friend Alex, AKA subject 7. But after helping catch the Sons of Ipswich, she knew that any goodness that was left in her was gone. She was as bad as those who held her captive. But the guilt left and was replaced by a fierce protectiveness of her best friend.

The threats they made loomed in her mind. What Dr Masters, the lead scientist, had told her. Alex was expendable to them, and she was not. So if they had to do something to him to make her cooperate they would. And she wouldn't let that happen.

Finishing her shower, Avery got out and headed for her wardrobe to get dressed quickly. One perk of living here and getting whatever she wanted was that her wardrobe was full of clothes she loved.

The first thing she saw when she left her room was the others on their way for breakfast. Sadly for her, breakfast would have to wait. She had a meeting with the devil.

"Avery!" Alex's voice rang through the others, as he pushed through the stream of people to get to her. He wrapped her in a huge hug before she could get a good look at him.

When he pulled away, the first thing Avery noted was the gruesome bruise across his left cheekbone and the cut on his lip.

"Oh my god, Alex! Are you alright?" She worried, her hand reaching to softly cup his bruised cheek. He hissed in pain when her finger lightly trailed over the bruise, but made no move to remove her hand from his face.
