“There is no perfection, only beautiful versions of brokenness.”
― Shannon L. Alder

clementine
chapter 15

"I swear to potatoes there's something in my eye." Auggie complains, hand achingly going across his face.

"It's brain cells, they're trying to crawl out of you," Fenny said, Clementine looked over at her best friend and frowned. "Knowing they don't belong because you have no brain."

It's not like her to be insulting like that, Clementine thought. Something must be wrong.

"Why a-are you, you being so mean today, Fen?" The girl asks her best friend, her Oly feeding her a piece of an orange a second later.

Clementine felt cared for, she had someone who noticed the little things about her-- how she didn't like peeling the oranges-- and took it upon himself to make her feel more comfortable.

"No reason," Fen's scowl told everything Clementine needed to know about why she was being a meanie pants; she was annoyed.

And maybe a little angry.

Clementine didn't like it when people around her were angry. It brought back bad memories.

"I called my future bae Aspen-Faye. Hey, that rhymes!" Auggie beamed over at them and Clementine caught the way Fen rolled her eyes and giggled. "Instead of AJ or Fen and now she's being a crabby, beautiful ass towards me."

What a compliment... she couldn't help but to giggle. Being called a crabby, beautiful ass. Every girl's dream.

As Auggie and Ren did math together, her best friends pulled her Oly into their conversation but Clementine made no effort to join, instead, she focused on her orange as she tried to figure out why sitting in Oly's lap was so comfortable.

Maybe it's because he's one of the only people that can touch the girl without her feeling like there was a million spiders crawling over her arms.

Maybe it's because he was always warm.

Or maybe she just liked being close to him.

Probably all of those...

She didn't even notice what her Oly had said about God-- but knowing that they were talking about religion-- until Conway abruptly let out a dark groan, making Clementine bite her tongue by accident but she gave no indications to the pain.

Something she learned to do over the years-- to pretend something didn't hurt when it did.

Most times she failed at that, though.

She knew she was a crybaby.

"Ugh! Why are the girls who like being choked and submissive during sex the same ones who cry when yelled at?" Conway slammed his phone on the table and Clementine relaxed further into Bartholomew as he tensed.

Clementine never really liked Conway, he was always flirting with her and mean. That comment just proved what she already knew-- that he was a pig.

"Because, asshole, there's a big difference between being sexually dominated and verbally abused." Her Oly looked ready to pounce and punch the guy. Clementine would've let him, honestly. "I hope to fuck that any girl who respects herself stays away for you, and the ones who don't."

"T-they do," She didn't mean to say it out loud but at least it was only in a whisper.

Thankfully Conny didn't hear her. He'd tell Obsidian and she'd have to explain why she insulted-- although it's really just stating facts-- his best friend.
