-rubie-
it's around 12 am on a friday night and i'm walking to my local convenience store, craving instant noodles. i'm on my uhm... period. ladies would know how i feel.i walk across the street, clenching my stomach when i remembered that i ran out of advil and pads. i groan in annoyance, knowing how embarrassing it is to buy pads. my eyes light up when i see the glowing sign of my convenience store ahead of me. i quickly trudge along the sidewalk, slowing my pace when i reach the inside of the store.
i head to the food isle and my eyes catch the variety of instant ramen among the shelves. i grab one of the packets and head to the medicine isle. my eyes scan the rows of medicine bottles and see that there is only one bottle of advil left. i then go to the pads and tampons isle, checking to see if they had any more, as the pads in this convenience store usually ran out quickly. i see that they're fully stocked on the ones i needed. i thank the lord and swiftly grab the pads, heading for the checkout counter.
"is that all for you today ma'am?" the guy behind the counter asks me in a monotone voice. i stare at him for a quick second, recognizing that he's from my school, clementine high. i didn't say a word about it, considering i was dressed in a baggy gray sweatshirt and pastel yellow pajama pants with lemons on them and had just bought a box of pads.
"yeah that's all for me." i respond, quickly looking down when he catches my eye. when he reaches out to scan my items, i blush in embarrassment.
i see out of the corner of my eye that he's glancing at me every few seconds, and i could tell that he recognizes me as well.
"that will be $16.35" he says, looking up at me once he's done placing my items in a bag. i get the chance to look at his name tag, and his name is liam. i pay him and take my bag, mumbling a quick 'thank you' before trudging out of the store and heading back home.
i unlock the door and walk into the house carefully, trying not to wake up my mom. i throw the bag of my items on my kitchen counter and begin boiling the water for my ramen.
our house isn't big or anything. it's quite cozy, perfect for two people, my mom and me. it has two bedrooms and one guest room, with two bathrooms, one in my mom's room and one across from mine. our house has only one story, but to me, it's perfect.
the water for my ramen starts to boil, so i start cooking my ramen. i finish eating after a while, so i go to my room to get some sleep. i check the time and i realize it's already 3:30 am. nothing phases me at this point, as i always sleep this late. i brush my teeth and head to sleep.

my eyes flutter open as my mom draws the blinds, revealing the bright sun shining directly at me.
"rue, you'll be late to the cafe!" my mom yells, tugging the sheets off of me.
i work at a cafe called empathy cafe with my two best friends, james and diamond.
"ughhh. five more minutes please?" i ask, shutting my eyes closed.
"rubie it's already 9:30" my mom deadpans.
"oh shit really?!" i exclaim, jolting out of bed and running to the bathroom to get ready.
my mom laughs at me and says, "yes! now go brush your teeth, your breath reeks love."
"gee mom, i love you too." i say with a mouthful of toothpaste, glaring at her.
she smiles at me with the most beautiful smile i know and walks out the door. my mom is honestly the most beautiful woman i know, and i certainly do not get my looks from her. my dad left us for a rich skank when i was about six years old. im 15 now and i honestly don't miss him at all, my mom and i are perfectly fine with our lives. one thing i don't understand is why my mom hasn't dated anyone yet, she's amazing and kind.
