Chapter 1

My muscles burned. My lungs screamed for air. The wind was in my face, pulling at my whiskers. My heart pounded. It would have been an amazing experience, leaping from building top to building top at blinding speed.

I glanced back, counting the increasing number of hawks following me. Guards swarmed every street below, trying to keep up. Of course, they couldn’t. I’d spent my three short years of life training for this: showing up Alexian’s guards at the only thing they did. Pursue victims into the Alpha’s claws.

The large gap between the Zega’s Outskirts and the City was coming up. The gap was a wall, and at the bottom was the only clean thing left in the North City. The river, filled with fish. But there was a limit to the food we could take, thanks to Alexian. My blood began to boil.

Focus, I thought, shaking my head. I can make this jump.

I was closing in on the gap. I braced myself…

Three…

Two…

…One.

I leaped. The wind tugged at my fur. I felt like I was flying.

I would have made it, too.

I yawned and stretched, the sunlight warming my royal-blue fur. I shook my pelt, scraps of moss and feathers falling back onto the spot that was my bed. Sniffing the air, I concluded that Mom had already hunted. Padding out to the larger room, I saw Mom sitting, finishing the remains of her serving of deer.

My mouth stretched into another huge yawn, and Mom looked up, licking her mouth to clean the little amounts of deer blood. “Your portion is over there,” she said, motioning the rest of the deer with a flick of her light brown paw.

“Nah,” I started. “I’m not hungry. I’m just gonna go for a walk.” I started out the door before Mom could object. “Watch out for Alexian!” she called. I barely heard her over the sound of wind rushing in my ears as my paws pounded the broken pavement.

The sun was still rising over the rusted Outskirts. I hadn’t missed it yet.

I aimed myself towards the wilderness, but not too deep. Dragons and crazy wolves roamed the areas just outside the crumbling Outskirts. I let my mind drift, putting my paws on autopilot towards a secret place I’d discovered.

150 years ago, four great cities were built; the North City, South City, East City, and West City. But they weren’t built by wolves.

When America was still real, humans built the Cities. They were so big, you could see the Skyscrapers of every city from a different Skyscraper in another City. Even the West City wasn’t hidden from the East City. Anyways, 50 years later, a foreign country wanted America for its Cities.

The nuclear war was so huge, that the Cities’ once great architecture wasn’t wanted anymore. There was too much nuclear for humans to live in, so 98% of the population fled, except for some scientists to study the nuclear’s effect on animals.

Shortly after the war, four wolf packs took over the Cities; the West was taken by the Storm Pack. The East belongs to the Abyss Pack. The South was dominated by the Rising Pack, and my City’s inhabitants came from the Winter Pack.

There was a constant fight for land. The South wanted to use the smaller, independent wolf packs for slaves. There wasn’t any law outside the Cities. Some of the smaller packs joined the Cities, but there were also those that opposed the Cities’ rule.
