OTHER She has a mare named Porridge.

ALESSANDRA ROSALEE MCKINNON put one foot into the stirrup of her favorite saddle and hefted herself up and over until she was sitting on top of her chestnut mare's back. She brushed her finger through her horse, Porridge's mane, then lightly squeezed with her legs and started them off at a walk across the public fields. Alessandra smiled to herself as she signaled for her Porridge to speed up to a trot. They trotted together around the border of the field and as they approached the side nearing the forest, Alessandra pulled out her bow and squinted one eye, shooting an arrow at the target she'd tacked up last time. Bullseye! Alessandra shot three more arrows before she heard a distant voice calling, "Alli? Alli? Don't tell me you're out shooting arrows again, Shorty!"

Alessandra groaned inwardly. It was her eighteen-year-old brother, Cason. He was only four years older than her but acted like he was twenty more. He also hated her because he thought she was the reason their father, who died a week after she was born, wasn't alive anymore. Alessandra urged Porridge to gallop and skidded to a stop next to a frightened Cason with a smirk.

"You know girls aren't supposed to be warriors, right Shorty?" Cason asked. Alessandra rolled her eyes.

"Did you need something?"

"Mom needed some herbs from the herbitary and she told me to bring you," Cason replied, not making eye contact with her. Alessandra narrowed her eyes at him, but nevertheless handed Porridge off to a stablehand and followed Cason out of the barn and up to the herbitary on the other side of town. Meducis McKinnon, Alessandra and Cason's mother, was the town's best healer and often asked her children to find her herbs and other ingredients for her remedies, which usually meant a visit to the herbitary across town.

The two McKinnon children arrived at the herbitary shortly and were greeted by Master Don, who was the head of the herbitary.

"Ah, Alessandra and Cason McKinnon. I've been expecting you." Master Don waved them into the herbitary and bustled around, picking leaves off different plants until he had a large bag of them, which he handed to Cason. "There you go. Say hello to your mother for me."

"Thank you, Master Don," Cason said politely, taking the bag from him and giving it to his sister. "Let's go Alli."

"Thank you, Master Don!" Alessandra called over her shoulder as Cason dragged her away. She shoved the bag into Cason's hand as they walked back to their house. They had just closed the door behind them when a shout rang out through the town and alarms started blaring.

"What's happened?" Cason cried, dropping the bag. Their mother, a petite woman with brown curls and blue eyes, appeared, looking frazzled.

"It has happened!" She cried, not even bothering to pick up the bag of herbs from the ground. "The queen has died!"
