i didn't write yesterday's entry because and only because i had to talk to dylan about when i could come over. he's given me his number and i've given him mine, and he's the only person under "D" in my phone other than dad. that sounded way too wrong. i feel better talking to him, as he may with me. he told me he liked my eyes, not just the color but the shape, and how they're a nicely even way from my nose. i haven't told him, but i like the curve that blends his neck into his shoulders, because it looks smooth and fluid, although that's only under his hoodies and shirts, i've never seen it bare - not that I want to okay im stopping.
zenith set the pen down on the table and fished her phone out from her pocket.

"you should try reading this sentence." zenith lightly tapped a short one with her pencil, at most eight words.
"which one?" he frowns and looks again. "okay. um. the birds- " he looked up at her incredulously. "this is about birds? okay. the birds swimming- "
"the birds perched, " zenith read for him. she guided his gaze with her index finger. "try to focus on one sentence." she took out a ruler and a book from her bag to cover up the other sentences, then read it for him. "the birds perched on the branches, "oh," they went, "the leaves have returned.""
"you have a beautiful voice." dylan commented. he reached out his thumb to absentmindedly stroke the back of her hand, on which the mark of her countless pen-drawn tattoos lingered. her breath hitched, a sudden longing to lean over and share a kiss with dylan rising up from the undiscussable area of her brain.
"dylan, " she found herself saying , as always. he looked her in the eye and repeated the sentence back to her.

they held hands.

the next day at school they barely talked, because they were sitting far from each other, and also because life sucked half the time.
but right after class, they were headed toward the nearby swing set, where zenith attempted to teach the boy she had a crush on to read.
they were on the sentence, "the swans swimming on the lake heard their chirps. " dylan had gotten 'on', 'heard' and 'the' , but nothing else. zenith had promised him another hand holding thing after another word. she was hoping he could pass.
"can i just hold your hand now?" dylan broke off halfway to ask. her face flaring, she allowed it.
