We were on top of the world, Harry and I. We had no place to sleep and the only possessions we owned could be carried in backpacks on our shoulders, but we felt like kings. And we had just taken the throne.
Our smiles couldn't fade if we wanted them too. They lasted on our lips when spontaneous kisses were stolen and when running was made fun through games and playful chases. We were on the right track to being truly free and this morning had been a perfect kickstart.
But even with the money we had just obtained, our spirits were much too high for people under these circumstances. And our luck wouldn't last, as our never-ending cycle of unfortunate incidents would lead me to believe. But we were lucky now, and I wanted to take advantage of it.
Maybe it was because of what we had just accomplished that my optimism soared, or maybe it was because I knew time was running out. It also could've been the mention of Christmas earlier that made me want to do something to celebrate. But I had been toying with a few ideas.
"What day is it?" I asked Harry.
"What do you mean?"
"Like day of the week," I specified. I tried to count them out myself, but I couldn't keep track of how long we've been gone.
"We left on what? A Friday?"
I just shrugged.
"We've barely been gone a week, I'd say it's Friday or Saturday."
I smiled. I had guessed something like that.
"Why?" He asked. He hoped to find the answer on my face, looking to it while his expression mimicked mine. The ghost of a small, mischievous and eager. "What are you thinking?"
"Well . . ." I started, "You're gonna think I'm insane, but just hear me out."
"Oh God," Harry said, but there was a chuckle in his words.
I had thought of ways to go about saying this, not wanting Harry to shoot down my idea the second the worlds left my mouth. But I couldn't think of how else to explain it or how to bring the subject about. So I just let my thoughts run free from my lips. "I want to go out dancing."
"What?" Harry asked with confusion and a little bit of caution.
"Just think about it," I instructed. "It could be any day now that they find out we aren't actually dead, and we'll barely be able to go into the city again. And who knows when we'll get those plane tickets. This is our last chance to do something like this for a while."
I knew the idea was ridiculous and I knew that Harry was aware of it, too. But even though it was crazy, I relished in the thought.
After being trapped inside walls of dreary grey with ghastly screaming voices swirling in the air around me for months, I craved a taste of life. Of fun. And if there was any time for that, it was now.
"Plus," I added. "We've never been on an actual date."
At this Harry's head shot up. He looked at me in amused disbelief, mouth open with a small smile to it. "You're right."
I nodded, feeling slightly triumphant.
"But I'm still not sure if we should do it. What if someone finds us familiar? Or if there are security guards? And we don't even know where the nearest place is."
"But it's the last thing anyone would expect." I said. "Out here, running through the woods is what's suspicious. But out there we'll just look like a couple of teenagers on a date. And it's just a matter of time before we'll be running through sewers and hiding in trees, we might not get this opportunity for a while."
