Another week. Another Owl. Another letter.
Carrie stood at the kitchen sink, scrubbing the last of the dishes. It was a sunny day, and very pretty out, the weather just right. She hadn't read Anna's last letter yet, but she would, just as soon as she finished these dishes. The kids were all outside, yelling and screaming to their hearts' content. School hadn't started just yet, and Carrie had told them all to make the best of their free time outside.
As she dried the last plate, she set it in the cabinet and wiped her hands on the back of her jean skirt, and stroked the owl that sat on the back of her armchair. He was waiting to take back a letter, and Carrie knew the beautiful creature wouldn't leave until she asked it to. Remarkably smart creatures, these owls. Or perhaps they were magic owls, and could also read minds. She took the letter from the side table and tore it open.
Dear Carrie,
They want me to transfer to a school in Scotland. It's called Hogwarts. I don't want to go so far, but they say it's for tradition, and so I can be closer to family. I asked them, "What about Mr. Finn?" but he said that he'll come for a visit.
I want to say, "What about Carrie?" but I have not told them about you yet. I don't want them to take you away from me as well. Sam and Anthia are not open-minded, as you and Mr. Finn are. They would not think of you as family--not real family, anyway. Mr. Finn calls it being protective. They want me all to themselves, because I am the last thing they have of my mother. I still don't want to go.
We leave in three weeks. I promise I will still write to you Carrie, but I won't be able to for a couple of weeks, because we will be so busy. I will try to get a note to you every now and then. Thank you for being there for me at the train station in New York. I will miss you when I get on the train for Hogwarts. Tell the kids I said hi. Has anyone new come to live with you yet? If Ally is still there, tell her Happy Birthday for me, will you?
Sincerely,
Anna
