The strange emptiness where pain should have been felt through the dream had faded, the alarm ringing loudly into her head. Amdis shot up in her bed, scooting back and holding herself close as she pulls herself together. A thin sheet of sweat covered her forehead, that stupid nightmare again, she thought to herself.

She checked the time on her phone after turning off the alarm. When she saw the time she swung her legs over the bed quickly and raced to throw on her thin blue sweater and dark blue jeans. She hurried down the steps and nearly triped on her way down, slamming the door.

A familiar voice from her side startled her, "Dang it Amdis, how long does it take for you to wake up?" It was her cousin, Ruby. Ruby lives a few blocks away and is an early riser. She always waits for Amdis, no matter how late she was. Ruby had perfect cute bangs across her forehead, colored a milky brown. Her eyes shone a deep blue, a soft blush always high on her cheeks.

Ruby leaned up from her spot resting on an electricity pole, awaiting an answer.

"Sorry Ruby, I've just had some things going on recently, you know?" Amdis spoke softly.

"Hey, I was just kidding. I get it, it might have been a year ago but it's still fresh in everyone's mind," Ruby placed a gentle hand onto her shoulder, "me and Bree will always be there for you."

"Thanks but, this isn't really your problem, it's not Bree's either. I just-" she paused, "you may have be her cousin, but I lived with her for years. I should have known...", Amdis trailed off.

"Hey, don't think like that! We're your best friends! Your problems are our problems, that's what being friends is all about right?"

"You cheese," Amdis muttered.

With a smile, Ruby lightly punched her shoulder. Running ahead, Ruby glanced behind her back to quickly shout at Amdis to hurry up as they raced to the school.

Once they neared the entrance, they begun to slow. Amdis pulls her bag tight on her shoulders before loosening and nearly dropping it, distracting herself through the quiet.

"You think Bree is waiting for us outside?" Amdis asked.

"Nah, she said it was too cold so she probably went inside." Ruby replied, relaxing under the soft wind. It was kind of chilly that day, but then again Bree did always get cold easily. Things like ripped jeans and light jackets over t-shirts were enough to make her shiver.

Amdis nodded, but then made a small sound of confirmation when she realized Ruby wasn't looking at her.

Amdis opened her phone and looked at herself, she looked like a mess. Her eyes had obvious purple bags beneath them, freckles dotted her face. Her black and white hair had become greasy and rough to the touch. She pulled at her lips where still it felt odd to not have the tiny holes filled by piercings. Her earings pulled out of her ears.

Amdis pulled her lower eyelids down in a taunting manner and stuck her tongue out. She felt stupid while doing it but it reminded her of the past, before the incident, it was still painful to think about.

It shocked everyone when they found out that school was still in session. The only other schools in the area were expensive, to much for small towners like Amdis's family.

Checking the time, Amdis pocketed her phone to look through the school. The building was old and dusty, it had many renovations in it's time open. Ash Hill High was a cheap school though, so not could be much be expected of it. The place was more commonly known now as Mayne's grave among the students.

Ruby flipped her wrist to glance at her watch and shot a short wave to Amdis. She waited a moment, watching Amdis walk away without replying. Ruby sighed sadly before running off to her home room on the upper floors.
