Jaeyoung

"Woo-woooooo! Let's give it up for the girls varsity track teaaaam! Yeeeaaahh!"

The immensely unexpected celebratory noise came from behind us.

It was 5 o'clock in the afternoon. The sun was still high in the air, there was a light breeze sifting through the trees, and the coach had just presented to us the proper way to carry out a betrayal—no warning of the ambush.

All of the girls spun around on their heels, only to be bombarded with silly string and party-popper confetti. The screams and fits of laughter pierced into the sky as we were showered with love by our dear brother track team. Some of us tried to duck behind others for cover while the rest of us resorted to running away. I was one of the rest.

I dumbly attempted an escape from the mess by running in the other direction. Boys would always be faster than girls, though, so I was unfortunately only able to make it about twenty feet before I was swept off my feet, soon to be carried back into the party zone.

"Ah!" I laughed as an abrupt pair of arms spun me around to face the other way.

"No escapees!" a familiar voice joked behind me. I looked to see who it was before suddenly my whole body was tossed into the air to be carried bridal style.

"Wah, Min Yoongi! It's been a while!" I exclaimed. My arms settled around his neck and he paused to look at me, just now realizing who I was. He took in the features of my grown face and then smiled, as if remembering who I was to him.

"No kidding," he laughed. "Where've you been, sis?" We both laughed at the inside joke from years ago. We used to pretend to be siblings in the fourth grade, but that was a while back now. The times we'd spent going back and forth, calling each other bro and sis were long gone. We were both seventeen, and, fortunately, I'd matured just as much as he had.

"That's Jung Jaeyoung to you!" I corrected, jokingly.

"Yeah, whatever you say!" he dismissed. "Ready for the shower?"

"The what—"

I braced myself when he suddenly took off running and a whole bucket of water was getting ready to be thrown at the both of us. "Now, Jimin! Now!" he screamed. I turned my face inwards towards his chest and flinched as the water crashed into us. I heard screams from the girls around me who got hit in the crossfire and ended up giggling when the shower was over. Yoongi put me down on my feet once we were drenched and then stepped back to take in the masterpiece of the field. I proceeded to wring out my shirt by myself, then was suddenly barreled into by my best friend, Byungsoon.

"Ah!" I yelped as my body was thrown forward. I was barely able to catch myself before falling over onto the ground. "Be careful!" I scolded her. "You know my limbs are fragile."

"Sorry!" she apologized right away. "I'm just very energized right now!" I felt her move her arms over the top of mine and then squeeze my torso tight in a hug.

"Okay, okay," I said, patting her hand. "Please. I can't breathe." She let go immediately and then I turned around to face her. Her eyes smiled at me, wrinkles forming at her temples. I gave a tiny grin, adoring her precious features, as if they belonged to a daughter of my own. Then I took her into a hug myself, her straightened black hair flying into my face as my head passed hers. I held it back from my mouth and then she spoke once more.

"Seoyeon is having a party later tonight before the last meet next week. Are we going?"

"Sure," I said. "As long as it's okay with my parents."

"Yay!" she cheered, now bouncing up and down. I shook with laughter as she dragged me through the air. This girl was going to be the end of me.

"Hey," I spoke up, once she was done, "can we go ask Coach to go in and dry off? My jersey's not getting any warmer out here."

"Yeah! I'll go ask her! Just give me a second!" she responded enthusiastically.

"Okay," I said as she ran off.

"Hey," I heard again from behind me. I spun around. Yoongi was back. This time with a towel. I reached out to take it from him as he passed it over. "Sorry, about the water. We didn't take into account that it would be sixty degrees today until like a minute ago." He grinned uneasily and I laughed at him.

"That's okay."

"To be fair," he scratched at the back of his head, water dripping from his own hair "it was Jimin's idea." I chuckled louder now, then brought the towel to my hair to begin squeezing the liquid out.

"I'm sure it was."

He smiled lightly at me.

"Unnie—"

I turned to see Byungsoon, back with an answer, but suddenly at a loss for peppiness. My mood was now slightly altered, eyebrows knitted together. She stopped in her tracks and stared past me at Yoongi, a perplexed expression on her face.

"Oh. Hi," she said timidly.

"Hi," he said back.

"Um," she looked back over to me and then resumed with her sunshiny attitude, as if someone had hit play on a radio after having paused it, "Coach said it's cool. Let's go."

"Okay." She reached for my arm and I turned to Yoongi once more before she began dragging me away. I pedaled backwards as her hand pulled mine in the opposite direction of him. "It was nice seeing you again!" I shouted.

"Yeah! Congratulations on making it to champions, you guys!" he replied. "I'll be rooting for you next week!"

"Thanks!" I waved. He waved back gently and my heart warmed from the sweet encounter. I let out a blissful sigh, missing the moment already. Then, after that, it was only a matter of seconds before we were gone.
