February 17, 2025, Known to Others as Presidents Day, but for me, it's my birthday.
Which is an important day. It rains light on this day only at night, the sun always glows down towards my window which gives me the perfect wake-up selfie, and it's only slightly chilly so I can wear my boots. But today felt different, felt unease. I glanced at the unopened letter on my nightstand. 'The Governer' Written out in bold, and italic letters. I picked it up and ripped it open with my plain pink nail 'Mia Davis, On your 18th Birthday you may see changes to your body, dots appearing or hair color magically changing at its own will. You are here by the governor to be tested and examined at midnight. Location is provided below. sencerly your Governer. Maybe we bring peace to our town'
I read over the letter and merely placed it back on my nightstand ignoring its warning. I stood over my window looking at the sky and feeling the breeze from the small crack danced on my dark melanin skin. Our little town Windbrooke Long ago there was an unexpected earthquake and weather change everyone thought it was normal but that's when people ended up dead some were soulless or ripped to shreds. That's when an unusual spacecraft came down on our town and killed loads of people it turns out those people are Aliens we call them neutral and if you have been turned neutral on your 18th birthday you're dead.. or at least that's what everyone else says, no one knows what happens when you become Neutral, or no one ever lives to tell the tale, so people made stories to scare children, which led to scaring adults and teenagers.
'Mia!" my mother called from downstairs. I looked over at my clock to see I was a little behind on time. In frustration, I walked to the bathroom in the hallway to wash up for school. I turned on the water in the sink and began to wash my face. I grabbed a towel hanging on the door knob. I investigated the mirror and saw the back of my hair turning red. Sighs "crap" I muttered under my breath. I grabbed the hair dye. Before you say anything, I have been seeing my hair turn red since I was little, I tried to cut it before, but my hair grew back fast. My mother came into the bathroom looking at me.
"you need a better way of hiding that red" My Mother Cher Davis A secretary for a home security company, She's my number one. She is the prime example of a Natasha Romanoff and Wonderwomen mixed together just a melanin version.
I looked back at her "I'm dying it's okay"
She begins to help me dye my hair. "Today is your birthday, are you excited?" I looked at my mother's reflection in the mirror, "Excited to begin a normal life in this boring town" She grabbed the instance dye and applied it to my hair. "hey, If none of the colleges responds to my intelligent daughter, then they're not worth it" I smiled at my mother in response as she finishes my hair. "18th Birthday, what if people think.." My mother instantly hushed me up "They won't. I've already told you I'll be there to tell them and show proof. I'm one phone call away sweetheart." I smiled up at her as I looked at the final project, My mother admired herself in the mirror pushing back her curled hair.
I headed downstairs and sat down at the table with my little brother Mike and my father. Only my mother and I know about my hair I was born with it my mom told me that it doesn't mean I'm one of the neutral it just means she inhales a lot of chemicals while pregnant with me that's what she always tells me. My mother sat at the head of the table. We began to eat our breakfast mom made me special pancakes with a smiley face and strawberries all around the plate. My dad looked at me worried that I would jump out and attack him.
Sometimes it's uncomfortable to eat with my family "Guys! Can we not be weird for once? She's not going to turn neutral like those freaks" I looked at my brother and smiled. Mike my twelve-year-old little brother, he's more of a gamer/ nerd vibes when it comes to people. But at home, he is always protecting me no matter what it is. It almost seems he is an older sibling protecting his little sister. Before my dad could speak a car honked outside, I looked out the window and stuffed my face with the remaining of my pancakes grabbed my bag. I gave my mom, Mike a kiss on the head. I turned to my father to plant a kiss on his head, but he moved away from me. "Bye Dad.."
