THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER IN CALIFORNIA, IN THE MID 90'S

I rest my head on my elbow with my head sticking out of the window. I watch as the apartments and small houses pass by as we drive by. I like to think i'm in a movie as Don't Speak by No Doubt plays on the radio. my long brown hair lightly flows along with the wind, sticking to my lip gloss as I continuously try to pull my hair away from my slightly sticky lips. I huff in annoyance of my hair sticking to my lips as I pull my head back into the car.

we then pull up in front of a large baby blue house, it looked like any modern middle class home. as my mom parks I stare up into the house that is my new home. driving from Chicago all the way to California was tiring and mentally draining, especially when you have an annoying younger brother and a mother that scolds you for everything since she obviously favorites your brother. my mom then hops out of the car and moves to the back of the car to grab our things. I still sat there staring blankly at the house, slowly imagining my new life here.

once dad left everything changed, we wanted to move away to get away from him. finally, my mom got enough of him and she wanted to get away from him, taking my brother and I along with her.

I then step out of the car and move to the back of the car grabbing two of my many suitcases. my mom then reaches for the suitcase in my right hand, taking it and setting it down on the floor. I look at her confused, knowing that she would scold me for not taking my things if she didn't asked.

"don't worry about your things for now, go pick out your rooms for now. here's some sticky post it's for you to put on your rooms when you choose them." my mom tells Ronaldo and I as she hands me baby pink post-its, and Ronaldo neon green. we nod and walk away towards the house, as my mom turns around taking care of her things I kick Ronaldo in the back of his knee. this makes his knee fold and he almost falls to the ground.

"I call dibs on the biggest room" I whisper to Ronaldo so my mom doesn't hear. He then groans as I run up to the house and slamming the door behind me, giving me a head start.

I then dash up the stairs quickly trying to find the biggest room. after some time I finally find the perfect room, it was huge with a bathroom connected in the far right corner of the room. I put a sticky note neatly on the door of my new room. I think of all the possibilities I could make with this room. I close the door behind me and skip down the hall reaching the stairs. I run down meeting with my mom who has started putting the boxes in the kitchen.

"the company says that the rest of our stuff should be arriving tomorrow. have you found your new room" she asks, I nod.

"yeah i found it. It's really big and it's got a bathroom connected to it!" I respond excitedly.
