Adam Present Day
Todays the day. Today's the day I finally get to leave this monotonous, dull town, and get my life started. I have a whole adventure waiting for me, and today's the day it'll finally start.
My father always wanted me to be something dull, like a accountant, thinking that it would end my reckless days. But in my heart I knew mother would have wanted me to do something big. So I decided to study astronomy at Columbia University, in hopes of discovering something grand. Something that would make people recognize me no matter where I go. As I walk down the street people would say "Hey, your that kid, who discovered,
that thing! Your Adam Finch!" For now I can only fantasize, till that day comes.
It's almost time to leave, and I'm so thrilled to finally get my life started. My Father, Mia, her husband Dave, and their new born baby girl, Lily, have come to see me off. Mia's eyes start to water, and she gives me a nice big bear hug. She was proud that I was pursuing my dreams.
She decided not to go to college once she met Dave. She said it was love at first sight and decided to stay in Alabama and get a simple job as a chef at the nearest café. Dave was a good man, and I'm glad they found each other. Mia had Lily 2 months ago and she's the cutest thing. She has the rosiest cheeks, bright blue eyes, like her dad, and little blond curls, like her mama.
Dad wasn't as excited as Mia was that I was pursuing astronomy. He was disappointed that I wasn't becoming something more "important", but nevertheless he still said he was proud of me, and gave me one of those man hugs when you pat each others backs, trying to act tough and all.
Once the taxi arrived, I waved goodbye, and got in. I watched them on the porch of our small cottage waving goodbye from the back window of the cab until it they were just a tiny spot in the distance. I was thinking of mother the rest of the ride to the airport. I have to catch the 6:00pm plane to New York, the city where anythings possible and dreams come true.
The flight to New York was quiet, and so was the taxi drive to the University. When we entered to city, I put my face up against the window and was stunned. Living in a small rural town in Alabama all my life, the city astounded me. It was ginormous. I was awed how the buildings seemed to touch the clouds, and reach for the stars. It literally took my breath away. Seeing the dazzling city, I knew I picked the right college and that great things were going to come from this experience.
The cab finally comes to a stop. I thank the cab driver, tip him, and hop out of the cab with my luggage. Butterflies in my stomach are making me feel sick. I'm so excited and nervous to jump start my life.
The grass was as green as mothers eyes. A rainbow array of flowers blooming everywhere. There were buildings of all colors. The blue buildings being our dorms. One building in particular caught my eye. It was a circular dorm type of lab with a huge telescope popping out on the roof. I was shaking with excited. That's where my dreams will come true someday.
Chaos. Once I walked thought those giant bronze gates all hell broke loose. People bombard me with welcomes and questions about dorms and class. I just smiled, and forced myself though the crowd. City people.
I find the all boys building I'm assigned to, and find the elevator. I have a nice
conversation in the elevator with the building attendant about where I'm from, and what I'm doing here. What a sweet woman. The elevator climbs to the 4th level. I wave bye to the woman and walk out. I walk down the hall and am greeted by boys from all over the world. I find room 164 and use the key they send in the acceptance letter to open it.
