Winter

It was a cold morning, the hills were white and covered with a thin layer of snow, the night before winter had begun.

At the southern tip of the village, welcoming visitors and outsiders, there was a small church made of very old gray wood. Its architecture was common in places like the capital and would hardly be seen in a place like Ornes, however, it was the oldest building in the village and one of the legacies left by travelers who went to those parts.

It had two main floors and its roofs formed triangles, looking from the outside it was possible to see the shape and size of all the rooms of the church, being the main hall, where the devotees frequented, the largest of them.

Adam woke up early, he was hungry since the night before he hadn't eaten anything. His feet touched the icy church floor as the boy bounced making the floor creak and dust falling downstairs, so he went until he found himself on the bedroom rug.

He was a skinny boy, with bold and beautiful features, he had dark skin and extremely straight and messy dark brown hair, his honey-colored eyes were large and very expressive.

- It's very cold. - He says chattering his teeth and shaking all over.

- Miss Helena told you to put on socks, it was you who didn't want to obey. - Bianna said while yawning.

She was the only girl in the church, she was the same age as Adam. She was a pale, plump little girl with long black hair and small eyes, she had the features of mountain monks. She was a full-on girl, very mature for her age.

The room they slept in was rectangular with a single round window above the stairs leading to the kitchen on the floor below. On the opposite side was the old staircase to the tower where the priest's rooms were located, also a place where a lot of snow used to accumulate through the holes in the roof.

The whole room was infested with a slight musty smell, so there was a small pot of flowers next to Bianna's bed, they supposedly left the scent of the place more pleasant.

The carpet that Adam stepped on was round, patchwork and full of holes, it was right in the center surrounded by the five beds of the orphans. It was a very empty room, had it not been for the old beds, there would have been only the carpet, the children and a vase with almost withered flowers.

They slept on a hay mattress and old cloths, wore layers of thin cloth and clothes that no longer fit together like a blanket to escape the nefarious cold that plagued them on winter nights.

Adam heard the creaking of the stairs coming from the kitchen, it was Miss Helena who had heard the noise that Adam made while trying to escape the cold.

- Adam. - Says the woman, whispering through her teeth at the same time she seemed to want to scream. - Don't you see that Thiago is still sick? Don't make a noise or it will wake you up!

The woman had long black hair, her skin was as white as Bianna's, but at the same time, she was more fragile. Her beauty was equivalent to the amount of health problems she brought with her. On hot and sunny days she could not go out, because her skin was too sensitive to the sun's rays, on cold days she could barely speak without a strong cold reaching her. However, even when that happened, she made no effort to take care of the five pests.
