ㅤ"Mom. ." I groan, my words muffled by the pillow over my face. I lay lazily on the couch, beads of sweat running down my neck, my whole body basically burning. God, I'm in an oven.
"Mom!" I groan again, this time, louder.
"Can we put the AC on max, please? My skin's literally burning right now." I mumble, taking the pillow off my face and use it to fan myself.
"It already is, sweets." My mom replies, taking a huge gulp of her cold drink. I sit up, groaning as I look at her. She makes her way towards me, sitting next to me on the couch.
"Come on, don't give me that look." She says, crinkling her nose as she takes another sip.
"I'm dying, mom!" I say, plopping back down on the couch, my feet on my mom's lap.
"Don't be such a drama queen." She says, rolling her eyes at me.
"But it's so hot!" I reply, acting like I'm actually crying. She laughs at that, making me smile.
"Go take a shower or something, it'll make things better."
"But I just did." I reply, burying my face on the couch. Everything falls silent after that, well besides the constant rambling of the reporter on CNN infront of us, everything's just silent.
"And for our weather report, America is being burnt to dust as it is placed inside an oven at this very moment." I mumble, mocking the reporter's accent as I wave my hands around with my eyes closed.
"Where are you going?" I ask, my eyes opening as I look at her, feeling her lift my legs so she could stand up.
"I'm going to take a swim and work on my tan." She replies, making her way towards the staircase. She stops climbing up halfway and turn to face me, smiling sweetly.
"Want to join me?" I push myself off the couch with a smile on my face, feeling the sweat on my skin. I though you'd never ask.
"You bet!" I reply, sprinting towards my room. I hear my mom laughing as I enter my room, locking the door and quickly make my way towards the closet. I grab whatever I see first, and in this case, I see the two-piece bathing suit with a white ruffled sateen bandeau top mom got for me last month, so I grab it and quickly change into them. Making sure I'm covered with sunscreen, I carelessly grab a towel and make my way towards my mom's room. I send a knock on her door, a huge smile on my face.
"Race you to the pool!" I shout, hearing footsteps coming closer.
"Game on." My mom replies, sprinting out of her room, lightly shoving me out of her way. I turn around, making a run towards the staircase, trying to catch up with her. I giggle as we race down the stairs, both of us holding onto each side of the banister as we loudly stomp our way to the last step.
"I'm so gonna win this!" I laugh, opening the double doors leading to our backyard. But as I'm about to make a splash towards the pool, my mom lunges herself forward and bellyflops into the water. I laugh loudly, clutching my stomach with both of my arms. Ouch. That must've hurt like a-
"Mom?" I lose my smile as I call, slightly alerted that she isn't coming back up yet. It has been a good minute or so and she's still nowhere near the surface.
"Mom, this isn't funny anymore." I start to feel my heart bang against my chest loudly, my breathing uneven. I throw my towel to the nearest lounge chair and take a deep breath before I plunge myself into the water. I try to keep my eyes open, even when the chlorine's basically burning my eyes, trying to find my mom.
