After a couple of days life seemed to go back to normal, I came to the conclusion that her and dad ran off to get away from here, but something told me that wasn't right. On May 19, 1934, I was fired from my mining job because I was late to work that day. I decided I wouldn't go home until my shift was over, hopefully I would be able to find a job by then. I took out my watch and saw that five hours has past, I realized had to get some money and quick. I started running down the street to see if there were any places hiring, I found none. After a sprint around town looking for jobs, I decided I would go home at the end of my shift and tell my mother I had been fired.

As I was walking home I saw a poster for the SS. It said, Germany needs you, help us defeat the Dirty Russians in battle today! After I finished reading that I overheard someone say that the pay was good and you got to travel the world. Once I heard that I went straight in to the building and said to the recruiting officer, "sign me up."

He looked at me for a second, as if he was sizing me up, and then said, "follow me." So I followed him into a room full of other men being checked out by doctors.

He pointed at the bed next to me and said, "Wait here." I sat down on the bed and waited for a couple minutes when a short man walked up to me and asked me to stand with my arms out to the side. This man seemed a little different than the rest of the doctors. First of all, his eyes were very intense and almost evil looking and his inspection of me seemed more thorough than the other doctors. Some of the doctors gave a quick glance to see who it was and turned away with an expression of fear in their eyes. This made me a little uncomfortable, but I continued to do what he said. At one point he told me to do as many jumping jacks as I could possibly do, when I finished he seemed impressed. After this he walked out of the room, I heard some muffled talk from the room he went into. About a minute later the officer came back in and told I would be shipping off to base tomorrow.
