That is one of the ways to make this world a better place to live in.
One when she was working in a ship designing industry, staff members seemed to be anxious about how to approach the officer in charge to inform him about a task given is still undergoing (not yet completed, and he would kick out or lash at people if they inform so.)
Then she started the discussion on how to approach him and keep things going. Then the rest of them pushed her to go and inform because she was the one who came up with the idea!
Seeing the burden and responsibility has fallen on her she prepared herself to take it cool, put on a smiling face, and entered in the cabin of the officer.
Seeing her smiling his facade changed from sternness to a question mark face. She thought that is her cue to inform him but she told him how well the task has been going on till then and what is left which made him to cut down the lashing!!
A smile makes it a good start.

Makes friends.
Diffuses tension.
Give a good impression.
Gives you a job. Yes its true consider a group of candidates equally qualified for the job and just a smile can make difference.
So smile and make others also to smile around you.
