Tragic

Alice had noticed there was always a moment of peace and silence in the house before her mother came home drunk and her sister came home high. Alice had learned to be efficient, doing all her homework (if possible) before the yelling started and she found herself outside in the cold. Alice had finished all her homework and was walking out the door just as her mother was stumbling in. Her mother paid Alice no mind screaming at her sister as she took her first step in the door. Alice let out a sigh of relief and walked.

How had her life ended up this way? Her family used to be functional. Her mother was loving, her sister was sober most of the time and her father was present. Now it seemed like her family was a more sinister and twisted version of themselves. Her father had been gone a week and her mother was spiraling into addiction. And Alice thanked God Janet, her sister, had stayed away from harder drugs and stuck with weed. Alice just needed to escape.

"Hey." a gruff voice said. Alice looked up and found herself in the park a few blocks away from her house. It was dark so the druggies and addicts were out. A girl on the swings being pushed by an older man. She looked at the person who spoke and her eyes widened. Harper Walters. He had gone to kindergarten with Alice. They had been friends. But by highschool, he barely went to class. And by sophomore year, he stopped showing up at all.

"Hi." Alice said, shifting uncomfortably. He looked terrible. His blue eyes were tired and bloodshot, his blonde hair was matted and dirty, his skin yellow and thin. He looked transparent. He looked scary. Harper was sitting on the playscape, his legs wrapped around the fireman's pole. He was looking down at Alice with interest and curiosity.

"You look familiar." he said, obviously hoping Alice would fill in for his lost memory. Alice smiled sadly and nodded,

"We went to kindergarten together. And highschool. Alice Holman."

"Ooooh, right." he said, snapping his fingers. "So, how's it going Alice?"

"Good, how bout yourself?" she asked. She was being polite, from the looks of him he wasn't doing too good. Harper shrugged,

"Could be better. So, Alice, what brings you here?"

"Running from home." she said without thinking. Harper looked at her for a moment then chuckled,

"Aren't we all." he looked to the girl on the swings and then back at Alice. "That's Miora. The guy behind her is Tyler. We run together."

"Nice." Alice said,

"Yeah. We're missing Alisha. She's kinda our leader." Harper spoke like he hadn't spoken to anyone outside of his little group in weeks. He spoke like he didn't have much time left to speak. He spoke like a person who had been shut up his whole life by adults.

"Where are you staying?" Alice asked him, her voice quiet. Harper looked at her, his expression was confused, like he didn't exactly understand her question. He cocked his head and pointed at the playscape,

"Here, of course."

"Oh."

"Yeah."

Alice and Harper looked at each other for a moment. They had known each other their whole lives practically, but they were so strange to one another. They knew very little about each other grown-up, all Alice could remember about Harper was that he liked dinosaurs and he had nine older brothers and they all had H names. In the silence that engulfed the pair, Alice tried to remember their names.

Hayden...

"So, why are you running from home?" Harper asked,

Harold...

"Yelling, fighting, drunks and potheads." Alice said, giving a vague explanation which Harper seemed to understand.

Henry...

"We're hitch hiking to Toronto if you wanna come." Harper suggested.

Hank...

"Yeah, okay." he handed her a flask, she declined. He shrugged and took a sip.

Hudson...

"Wanna go get your stuff?"

Harrison...

"Sure." she started walking. Harper yelled something at his friends and jumped off the playscape to follow her.

Hugo...

"I'm sorry about this." Harper said, pulling out a knife as he walked behind Alice.

Hawk...

"Sorry for what?" she laughed, confused.

Hiram...

"Everything." he said, lunging at her. He grabbed her and stabbed her chest before she could scream. She fell to the ground and saw Harper standing over her, Moira and Tyler beside him. Laughing. She fell into their trap. She felt a single tear roll down her cheek as the life bled out of her.

Her family didn't notice her absence for six says. She was found by the garbage man. She was found a block and a half from home.

A tragic death to a tragic life.
