CHAPTER 1

“BREAKING NEWS! Murder has been named. The Infamous Phoenix has been named as Blaise after last night’s victim survived for long enough to name them. Marley Jackson aged nine-teen suffered almost seventeen burn wounds to tell us one name 'Blaise' police are now searching the country for this Murder, or maybe.. Murderess.”

I stared at the newspaper numb. It made it more real seeing it in print , printed on papers Marley’s grinning face and curly hair plastered on newspapers everywhere. I shudder the newspaper vender glances up at me scowling.

“Do I look like a bloody library buy it or get away?”

I shuffle away from the stall and down the street wearily. I hear the sound of the loud music before I see Paul’s house. I hope no-one will recognize I share the same second name as Marley I couldn’t stand if people started to know me as the cousin of “The Phoenix’s” latest victim. I turned the corner , there was Pauls house.

Music was thumping , Paul was no-where around. Probably upstairs with some girl knowing him. I winced a little at the drunk girls making fools of themselves one douche was going around kissing all of them and getting his friend to take photos. I pushed through the crowds I didn’t recognize anyone. The music was crap anyway I decided to get someone to tell Paul I’d come and then clear off. I worked my way to the kitchen. One girl was laying on the kitchen table sleeping peacefully her mouth hanging open , the loud music slightly lessened here. Another girl stood by the sink clutching an empty bottle starring out the window into the blackness of Paul’s yard. She spins around her lips startlingly red and shiny she had green eyes like marbles and a tight black skirt and boots.

“Not your kinda thing is this?”  She arches her eyebrows.

It’s obvious she’s not drunk. She picks up a red plastic cup and fills it with water sipping from it leaning on the sink. I feel almost intimidated by this girl she’s different from others. She’s the kind of poisonous girl you want to avoid , the kind of girl not un-willing to stab her friends in the back to get what she wants. The kind of girl you want to avoid especially if you’re a boy. So why did I step forward? Stand next to her and lean on the sink and look into those green eyes? Because I was lonely.

“So I’ve been living here since I moved from Manchester and then I met Paul from work and- Hey I love this song.”

She grabbed me and pulled me into the middle of the kitchen. I bet that you look good on the dance floor was thumping into the kitchen she grabbed me by my waist pulling me into her. This was a dangerous girl. I nestled into her ,  running a hand through her chocolate coloured hair. This was a girl I should leave alone. She laughed lightly into my ear as she moved her body with mine her fingers brushing under the hem of my navy blue shirt. This was a girl I should get away from. I leant forward and touched my lips to hers. She kissed me back hungrily her hand behind my head. A mumble jerked me back to the kitchen. The girl that had been asleep was sitting on the table , she started to cry and rub her eyes smudging make-up down her face.

“My names Isabel by the way” The girl said her green eyes glinting as she smiled and ran her finger along my jaw line.

“Lets get out of here. You looked like you were gonna leave so walk me home?” She asks making her eyes wide in a puppy dog look. I grinned and shrugged.

“I might as well” I replied without a thought. She gripped my hand and led me through the thick crowds that seemed to of grown. I followed like a dog. Outside the cool air was a shock against my warm cheeks she pulled my arm around my shoulders fitting neatly under.

“I only live a few streets away.”

We make our way along the lamp-lit street. She glances up at me then gives a knowing smile. Those eyes of hers that seem to of seen the world , the future , the present , the past. She nods down the street to a block of flats. She leads me inside the building her fingers loosely linked with mine. Flat 68 Floor 3. She has her keys in her hand and turns and grabs me by collar of my shirt and presses her lips into mine.

“You want to come in...?”  She murmurs. Suddenly I’m back to when I was 6. I had ridden my bike without stabilisers for the first time , it was a big risk then. I could do it! But my brother was racing ahead I wanted to join him and went careering forward-right into a wall my wrist giving a painful snap. That taught me not to rush things. Something told me Isabel was like that bike if I rushed it I would get broken. I slowly pulled back.

“Not today.” I said slowly she nodded and shrugged then let her self into her flat. I went slouching down the corridor.

“HEY!” I span around Isabel was leaning against the doorway.

“What’s your name” she called.

“Griffith” I shouted back. “But my everyone calls me Griff.”

“Griff it is then” And she shut her door.
