Luna grinned, pulling the door to Asterin's chambers open. The tray that she balanced in one hand had a large cake with "Happy Birthday Asterin" spelled on top of it with fruit. It was early in the morning, the sun just starting to peak in through the window in Asterin's antechamber.
This was the second time Luna had been in her rooms- earlier this morning, she had taken a fraction of the flowers and bouquets people had brought for her and placed them throughout her chambers. The sweet fragrance was almost intoxicating, but the beautiful arrangements made the rooms feel alive.
Luna set down the tray on a table in Asterin's antechamber, then opened the door to Asterin's bedroom. There was a patch of sunlight on her bed, illuminating Asterin's face as she slept. Her hair was mussed around her face, and she had an arm thrown over her forehead. Luna crept closer to her bed, careful not to wake Asterin up. When Luna was right above her, she reached out and tickled her sides. Asterin woke up with a yelp, squirming and falling out of her bed. She glared up at Luna from the floor.
"Happy Birthday!" Luna reached a hand out for her.
Asterin finally grinned, pulling herself up and accepting Luna's hug. "Can't believe I'm this old," she said.
Luna shrugged. "At least you have cake." She motioned behind her, though the door, and saw Asterin's eyes widen at the large cake. She gave Luna a quick smile, then headed straight for the cake. She started cutting into it immediately, getting frosting on the sides of her hand as a result of her hastiness.
Luna touched Asterin's shoulder. "You didn't even read what was on the cake!" she protested.
"Yes I did. It said 'Happy Birthday', just like every year." Asterin lifted a slice to her mouth. "Want some?"
Luna shook her head, a small smile on her lips at Asterin's odd cake addiction. "Oh! Asterin, we must choose your dress for tonight!"
Asterin groaned. "I totally forgot about the ball."
"How could you forget? It's for you!"
"I was going to go riding with Quinlan tonight." Asterin's sheepish grin had bits of frosting on it.
"Well, maybe after. Many people are coming tonight just for you; I'd recommend not wasting their time."
Asterin gave her a light punch before heading into her room, saying, "Always the serious one, huh."
Luna frowned. 'Well, you need someo-"
"I'm kidding, I'm very glad to have you as a best friend and as my lady-in-waiting." They were in front of the entrance to Asterin's closet now. Asterin put her hands on Luna's shoulders. "You ground me, Luna, and I thank you for that."
Luna blushed, mumbling in response, "Who's the serious one now?"
Asterin barked out a laugh. "Alright, alright. Let's pick something out for tonight." Luna grinned at her friend's back as they headed into her closet, happy to have Asterin as her closest companion.
-----------------------------------------------
Asterin rushed out of her rooms, tugging a boot on and pulling her hair up as she went. Luna had left moments before, blushing furiously, after Asterin had given her one of her many unworn dresses to wear to the ball. Luna adored pretty, intricate things, and that was exactly what that dress was. No doubt Luna was trying it on now, planning what jewelry and shoes and other accessories to wear with it. Asterin grinned at the thought, still racing through the palace corridors.
She still had training with Orion today, regardless that it was her birthday, and being with Luna had made her lose track of time. It was past breakfast, and Asterin had only had that slice of cake from earlier. Hopefully it would be enough to tide her over before she could snag a real meal from the kitchens.
