Have you ever felt something so close that you could feel it in your hands but as soon as you grabbed it it escaped your clasped hands? So close is the entire story of Ailena the Card Thrower. Her life was easy to start with, in a happy family, but then the cold came. The dark days as we call them where fear crept into everybody's mind. Fear of the soldiers, fear of the card thrower, fear of death.
But maybe I should explain who the card thrower is. It is a person with a special ability. They can throw a playing card so precisely the corner of the card would embed itself a quarter of the way in to the target. A fatal weapon. The original card thrower was sent to protect the earth and he was praised and rewarded for his heroic deeds defeating villain after villain. But as he lay on his death bed he knew it was his job to pass his cards and knowledge onto the next person. And so the throwers were praised over the ages. Until the dark days. People became suspicious and locked the card thrower of that generation in an asylum high in the mountains, where the cragged wind howled over the stone towers. He had lost all hope. Until Ailena showed up.
