Katniss POV:
I stare at the ceiling. It's my first night back from the hunger games. Back in my own bed. I feel comforted my mother's soft humming and the presence of my sister beside my bed.
As I drift off to sleep Rue's face fills my mind. The spear piercing through her hundreds of times. Me burying her in flowers. Her voice echoing through the trees.
Every moment I've spent with Rue floods into my brain. And the strange thing is, I don't struggle. I want to see Rue again, even if she's dripping with blood. I don't want to forget her and who she was.
As my mind starts to replay the day Rue died, I'm prepared to see her die. Prepared for two hovercrafts to come overhead.
As I approach the spot where she was killed I think to myself, what if Rue doesn't have to die? I ready my bow and aim it in the direction of were the boy with the spear will soon appear from.
I hear Rue's melody to let me know she's okay and I can see the boy with the spear. Sharpened for a kill. It's now or never. I release the arrow and the boy tumbles to the ground. It was a clean shot, straight through the eye. The boy sends an ear piercing scream through the forest.
I run to Rue, pulling her into my arms.
"You're safe with me Rue. I won't let them hurt you." I say, sobbing in her arms.
"I'll always be safe Katniss." Rue says. I sit there, holding her tightly, not wanting to let her go. But as reality forces her to fade away, I still know Rue's words are true.
Even if there really were two deaths that night, in my mind there was only one. Because Rue's still with me, safe and sound.
