I looked up at the clouds as I walked home from school. A storm was coming and I was still 3 blocks away from home. The first raindrop fell, causing me to sigh. This was the third time this week that I would be showing up at home, soaked. I crossed my arms and glared at the sidewalk as I walked. I heard a car pull up to me and I wasn’t sure if I should stop walking or keep going.
"Hey Evans." I turned slowly as I recognized my last name and the voice. It was my best friend Kass. I forgot that she was taking her driving test. It looks like she passed.
"Hey Michaels." I got into the passenger seat and she smiled at me. "What?" I asked when she continued to stare.
“Do you wanna go home or to my place?” She was almost bouncing up and down in excitement.
“I have to go home, mom needs me.” I gave her a sad smile. I didn’t like my house, it wasn’t fun at all. I’m pretty sure that my mom hated me.
“Oh, I’m sorry. At least you have a ride now.” She shrugged her shoulders and pulled away from the curb. 18 by One Direction came on the radio and Kass turned it up. I sighed and stared out the window. I wasn’t a big fan of the music that Kass liked. She started singing along and it took every bit of self control not to cover my ears. She pulled up to my house and I gave her a small smile as I got out of the car. I walked up to my house without turning back and went inside. My mom was sitting in the living room and so was my dad. They fought so much it was rare to see them in the same room together.
“Um, what’s up?” I put my school bag on the floor and sat on the couch next to my dad.
“As you know Alexandra, your father and I are foster parents.”
“Yeah, what about it?”
“You’re not our daughter Alex.” My dad put his hand over mine. “Your mother asked us to watch over you until her and your father were ready. You have three other siblings and they thought that they weren’t ready for you. They feel like they’re ready now.”
“Who’re my real parents?”
“The Paynes.”
“Please tell me that they don’t have a son named Liam.”
“Actually they do.” My father looked shocked. “He’s actually the one on his way for you right now. Your stuff is already on its way to your brother’s house.”
“I thought that my parents were ready for me.”
“Alright, your brother wants to spend time with you. I think it’s a great opportunity.” I sighed loudly and got up from the couch. I walked out the front door, slamming it behind me. I sat on the front step and watched the rain come from the heavy clouds. A car pulled up in the driveway and the window rolled down.
“Alex?” I recognized Liam Payne’s face from the posters on Kass’ bedroom wall. Oh no, what the hell was I going to do about Kass? She was absolutely in love with these boys.
“Yeah, that’s me.” I got up and walked over to the car. Liam got out of the car and opened the back door for me. “Thanks.” I said it with more attitude than necessary. I got into the car and Harry Styles turned to look at me from the front seat.
“Hello Alex.”
“Hi.” I gave a small smile and looked out the window. “Can we go somewhere really quick?” I asked Liam after he got into the car.
“Sure, where do you want to go?”
“I want to surprise my best friend if that’s okay. She loves you guys.”
“And you don’t?” I wasn’t expecting Harry to ask me that.
“Don’t take this personally but no, I like to be different from everyone else.”
“We can pick up your friend. Just give me directions.”
“Um, just pull out of here and then take a right. Keep going straight until you see a huge apartment building, that’s where she lives. I’ll run up to her apartment and get her.” I leaned back in my seat. I should have said goodbye to my parents, well at least my father. He was always there for me when I needed him. My mom, well I wouldn’t miss her. I didn’t realized where we were until Liam stopped the car. “I’ll be right back.” I got out of the car and ran into the building before I could get soaked by the rain. The lobby manager watched as I got into the elevator. I pressed the 4th floor button and waited for the elevator to take me up.
I walked into Kass’ apartment without knocking. She was dancing around her apartment singing along to 5 Seconds Of Summer songs. She stopped when she saw me and then she started giggling to herself.
“What did you need Alex?” She leaned against the kitchen counter.
“I have a surprise for you downstairs. We’re going out.”
“And where are we going?”
“My new home, turns out my parents were just my foster parents. My brother is waiting.” I shrugged my shoulders like as if it was no big deal.
“Um, okay.” She looked like she was waiting for me to break down at any second. She disappeared into her room and came out seconds later with her jacket and shoes on. “Ready.” She followed me out of the apartment, locking the door behind her. We went to the ground floor. I walked out of the elevator with confidence, Kass close behind me. We reached Liam’s car and I opened the door for her. “What’s the big surprise?” She asked me as I got into the car. The boys had put on hats and sunglasses while I was inside.
“I’ll show you when we get to the house.” I shrugged my shoulders and she just stared at me, looking slightly disappointed. I leaned back in the seat as Liam drove us across town. I could practically see Kass’ jaw drop as we pulled up to the One Direction house, this thing was huge. I got out of the car and so did Kass. As soon as Liam and Harry got out of the car, they pulled off their hats and glasses. I saw Kass’ eyes widen and before I could catch her, she was on the pavement. “Oh crap.” I said to myself, running around the car to her. Liam was smiling but he picked her up and carried her into the house.
