"Will you grab me those sunglasses Johanson?" I ask as I speed down the abandoned road towards the sunset. Agent Johanson reaches over and places them into my hand, and before I put them on I thank him with a wink. "Another mission accomplished, guess it's back to headquarters then."
As my foot presses the accelerator an odd siren blares througout the car. I look at Johanson only to see an empty seat, and when I blink the whole scene in front of me changes.
Blue. All I can see is light blue. I groan and roll over; the same blue pillow and the same blue cover. My head throbs quickly and I grab my phone, turning off the alarm flashing the words GET UP LAZY ASS. BEACH TIME.
Stretching as I stand, I go into my bathroom and turn on the shower, in the mirror I can see clear as day how tired I am, last night's makeup smudged across my face. God I have to get some coffee on our way out of town.
Once I'm in the shower I start to wash my hair, humming the song "Blank Space". "So it's gonna be forever? Or it's gonna go down in flames. You can tell me when it's over, if the high was worth the pain." By the time I finish the chorus I'm done and reaching for a towel.
I head to my closet to pick out some clothes and a swim suit, starting with my favorite strapless purple bikini top and black bottoms. Then I put on a light sea foam green fishing shirt with my initials monogrammed on the back which stays unbuttoned considering me rushing to finish getting ready. Lastly I slide into some jean shorts and black flip flops and pull on my favorite baseball cap. I smile to myself in the mirror on the wall winding downward with the stairs.
The old tattered baseball cap was my dad's. It's red and white are dull and the S on the front is ripped on the side, barely holding together. Whenever we went to the beach he always wore his Stanford hat saying something about how wearing it and going out in public with me was the best form of braggery, that going to such a big school from a small town like this and having such an amazing daughter was an honor.. My mom was never in town because of business trips so my dad and I were always really close. When he died when I was 14 I was destroyed, and after his death my mom stayed at home for a couple years, then when I turned 16 she said I was an adult and that I could stay home alone in between her business trips. I see her maybe once or twice every 6 months, which is ok since I'm in school.
Now, 17 year old me walks outside with a banana in hand, grinning wildly at my bestfriend who is sitting in her white 2014 BMW convertible singing obnoxiously to one of her preppy one direction songs. I laugh and she looks at me with a smile and pushes the door open for me.
"Hey! Alright so you know that I've been planning this day for like a week." She starts the car and starts speeding down the road, "It's important to me that we get everything done that I originally wanted to, then you can take over any free time if you'd like. Just keep in mind that we're going to the bonfire, ok? Because I must have told Jesse a million times that we would be there and you know how hot he is so please don't mess anything up. Seriously I-" Clamping my hand over her mouth, her eyes bug out and she glances at me before looking back at the road.
"Honestly Cher, I get it. I really do." I remove my hand and laugh at how she nods frantically muttering a simple ok.
10 minutes later we pull into the long driveway to our house. Cher squeels and jumps out, "I'll meet you down there seniorita!" Cher grabs her bags from the car and heads down to the sand pulling a chair behind her that had layed in the sand by the front of the house.
Closing my eyes I take a deep breath, trying not to think about how long today is going to be. Not to mention the stupid annual bonfire that seniors hold every year the saturday before the first day of school. It sort of stands as a night where incoming seniors can party and relax before having to spend another year sat inside our ancient school doing practically nothing.
A loud honk from the house over a while causes me to shoot up and slip, out of the open car door. Rubbing my ass from the impact with the hard concrete ground, I send a cold glare to our neighbors, making eye contact with one neighbor in particular. My glare hardens further and I look down, they just aren't worth my anger right now. Today is supposed to be a great last beach day for a while, and they aren't going to ruin it.
As I begin to move my feet to the firm ground and pull myself up, careful not to move to much until the aching throughout my tailbone ends, I feel two large hands grasp my waist and set me upright on my feet.
"I'm so sorry! I swear I didn't mean to startle you I was trying to-"
"Stop. Really I'm fine." I flick his hands off my body in disgust and scowl at him, "You don't have to do that. Go back to your 'friends' and mind your own damn business." I turn away from Tyler, and gathering my things in my arms, lock the car, strutting to the beach without even checking to see if he left.
"Hey again." I sigh, "I'm going to go grab some coffee or something from the house, you want anything?" Cher looks at me with concern, seeing my 'please don't' look and dismissing my distress with a smile, telling me that some lemonade or something fruity would be great.
"K. I'll be back in like two seconds." As I walk away i take my hair, pulling it into a pony tail through the back of my hat.
Climbing the stairs and going through the front doors, I let out a long sigh and turn on my heels to people watch for a second. That guy to the right of where Cher is looks like a Hollister model pulled straight from a picture. Ha! There's a guy off to the left who looks like he's in his late 30's, standing in the shallow waters looking around through the clear liquid frantically, he probably lost something stupid like a high school class ring.
I laugh, turning towards the kitchen, and as I come through the doorway, I smile seeing the pictures we've hung on the fridge of both our families. I find my eyes lingering on a picture taken of my brother last year at school. Jackson is my 9 year old brother who started going to boarding school in England after our father's death.
I haven't talked to him in a while; I should call him tonight. His birthday is coming up in about 2 months. I was thinking I'd surprise him and fly for his 10th. I remember for my 10th birthday Dad made a big deal about how it was double digits and I should celebrate like an adult.
I smile at the memory, gathering the two drinks and heading back to where Cher lounges in front of the house. Jackson never really liked big parties, he always said he'd rather spend his time with people that he would know for most of his life, than with people who jump in and out of friendships like hopscotch.
As I reach Cher I hand the cherry lemonade to her and sit on the chair laid out next to her, sipping my coffee. God, I live for the simple things in life, like summer days on the beach spent with one of the people I love most. This is going to be a good day, it has to be.
Just a story I was thinking about. Comment if I should keep writing and I'll publish a couple more chapters.
